The BBC has finally confirmed the release date for Time Season 3, with David Tennant joining Siobhan Finneran in the latest instalment of Jimmy McGovern’s acclaimed prison drama. Three years after its second season aired, Time will return on Sunday, 11 October, with all three episodes available to stream on BBC iPlayer from launch day. The first episode will also air on BBC One at 9pm, followed by the second episode the following evening.

The new season introduces another story and a new cast of characters, this time taking viewers inside a Young Offender Institution. Tennant stars as veteran prison officer Bobby Bailey, while Finneran reprises her role as prison chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell, the only character to have appeared across all three seasons.

What Is Time Season 3 About?

The third season of Time follows prison chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell as she arrives at a Young Offender Institution while struggling with a crisis of faith. When tragedy strikes inside the prison, she finds herself clashing with veteran officer Bobby Bailey (David Tennant), who is dealing with problems of his own. Bailey knows more about the circumstances surrounding the incident than he is prepared to admit, leaving him struggling with guilt as Marie-Louise attempts to uncover the truth.

Meanwhile, two teenage offenders, Peter and James, are trying to survive their first months behind bars. James is struggling to face his parents following a terrible act of violence, while Peter must decide whether to reveal the truth about an innocent man’s death or remain loyal to his family. As the two teenagers form an unlikely friendship, their experiences raise questions about whether they can change their futures while living in such a difficult environment.

Like its previous seasons, Time will explore the lives of both prisoners and the people responsible for looking after them, with the new setting bringing a different perspective to McGovern’s prison drama.

When Is Time Season 3 on BBC? Full Episode Schedule

Time Season 3 premieres on Sunday, 11 October at 9pm on BBC One, with the second episode airing the following evening. The confirmed BBC One broadcast schedule is:

However, viewers who would rather watch the entire series without waiting for the television broadcasts can do exactly that. All three episodes will be released together on BBC iPlayer on Sunday, 11 October.

Who Is in the Time Season 3 Cast?

David Tennant leads the new cast as Bobby Bailey, a veteran officer at the Young Offender Institution who finds himself caught up in a serious incident. He is joined by Siobhan Finneran, who returns as prison chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell.

The supporting cast includes Daniel Ryan as custodial manager Freddie Jennings, alongside Jo Joyner as Nicola and Vinette Robinson as Erica. Louis McCartney and Ollie McNulty play teenage offenders James and Peter, whose growing friendship becomes an important part of the story. Chukwubuikem Molokwu also joins the cast as Christopher.

Is Time Season 3 Connected to the Previous Seasons?

Each season of Time tells a different story, with new characters and a different setting, meaning viewers won’t need to have watched the previous instalments to follow Season 3.

The drama originally premiered in 2021, starring Sean Bean as a former teacher serving a prison sentence and Stephen Graham as prison officer Eric McNally. Its second season arrived in 2023, with Jodie Whittaker, Tamara Lawrance and Bella Ramsey leading a new story set inside a women’s prison.

Siobhan Finneran’s Marie-Louise O’Dell has appeared throughout the series, providing a connection between the different stories. Season 3 will now explore life inside a Young Offender Institution, following the experiences of teenage prisoners alongside the officers and staff responsible for their care.

Jimmy McGovern has delivered some incredible television over the years, and the first two seasons of Time certainly set a high standard. We’re also delighted to have Siobhan Finneran back as Marie-Louise. Having her character return each season is a lovely way of keeping that connection between the different stories, and we’re looking forward to seeing how she fits into the story at the Young Offender Institution. Having all three episodes available immediately means we probably won’t be getting much else done that Sunday. Consider us sentenced to the sofa!
