Channel 4 has announced the cast of The Night They Vanished, a new six-part romantic thriller starring Gabrielle Creevy (Black Doves, The Guest) and Callum Scott Howells (It’s a Sin), with filming now underway in Wales. Based on Vanessa Savage’s novel of the same name, the upcoming drama follows a young woman whose life is turned upside down when she discovers a disturbing prediction about her family’s deaths on a true-crime website. Her attempts to uncover the truth lead her back to the hometown she left behind, where she finds herself caught up in a terrifying mystery.

What Is The Night They Vanished About?

The Night They Vanished follows Anna (Gabrielle Creevy), a young woman who has built a life for herself in Cardiff, far away from her family and the memories of her childhood. However, everything changes when she discovers that her childhood home has been listed on a true-crime website as the location of her family’s future deaths. Even more disturbing is the discovery that the website is run by Cai (Callum Scott Howells), an intriguing man she has recently met on a blind date.

Cai insists he had nothing to do with the mysterious post, while the police dismiss the prediction as a hoax. But when Anna discovers that her family has vanished, she realises she cannot ignore the warning. Desperate for answers, Anna returns to her hometown, a remote coastal village in South Wales, where she must confront the past she thought she had escaped. With her family’s lives potentially at risk and time running out, she has to decide who she can trust, including Cai, whose involvement in the mystery raises plenty of questions.

The six-part drama promises a complicated romance alongside its central mystery, with Anna’s investigation gradually exposing long-buried family secrets.

Who Is in The Night They Vanished Cast?

Gabrielle Creevy leads the series as Anna, a fiercely independent young woman whose determination to protect her family forces her to confront some painful memories. Creevy, whose previous credits include Black Doves, The Guest and Amadeus, described her character as someone who is loyal and carrying considerably more hurt than she lets people see. Speaking about the role, Creevy said: “It’s a gift of a role and I can’t wait for audiences to unravel the truth with her.”

Joining her is Callum Scott Howells, best known for his performances in It’s a Sin, Deadpoint and The Beautiful Game. He plays Cai, the charming but mysterious owner of the true-crime website who becomes romantically involved with Anna. Discussing his character, Howells explained: “Cai is charming, complicated and never quite what he seems. He could be the love of Anna’s life… or the centre of a terrifying conspiracy.”

The supporting cast includes Tamzin Outhwaite (The Wives, Ridley Road) as Anna’s stepmother Jo, alongside Steffan Rhodri (Gavin & Stacey, Death Valley) as her father, Idris, who may know more about the family’s disappearance than he initially reveals.

Matthew Gravelle (Broadchurch, Keeping Faith), Lisa Victoria (Pobol y Cwm), Jack Quick (Tree on a Hill), Andrew Lennon (Death Valley), Callum Hymers (The Pact) and Bella Shewan complete the announced cast.

Is The Night They Vanished Based on a Book?

Yes. The Night They Vanished is based on the novel of the same name by author Vanessa Savage, with the television adaptation written by Angharad Elen (The Light in the Hall) and Hannah Daniel (Mudtown).

The series is being produced by CliffEdge Entertainment, part of BBC Studios, in association with Channel 4. Geraint Todd is directing, with Sian Elen John serving as series producer. Filming is currently taking place in Wales, with the production receiving support from the Welsh Government through Creative Wales.

Speaking about the adaptation, writer Angharad Elen expressed her excitement about bringing Savage’s novel to television and highlighted the opportunity to showcase Welsh talent. “As a Welsh writer, I’m particularly proud to see the series set and filmed on my home turf,” she said.

Executive producers include Sarah Creasey, Deborah Sathe, Angharad Elen and Branwen Williams, with BBC Studios handling international distribution.

When Will The Night They Vanished Be Released on Channel 4?

The Night They Vanished will consist of six episodes, each approximately 48 minutes long, and will air on Channel 4 in the UK. Channel 4 has not yet announced an official premiere date or confirmed when the drama will be available to stream.
