The Institute Season 2 is getting closer, with MGM+ releasing the first extended trailer for the return of its Stephen King thriller and giving us our first proper look at Alfie Allen’s new character, Nolan Reeves. The series returns in November and will continue the story beyond the events of King’s original novel, following Luke Ellis and his friends after their escape from Dennison. Joe Freeman returns as Luke alongside Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker, with Game of Thrones star Allen joining the cast as a billionaire with his own plans for the Institute.
What Happens in The Institute Season 2?
Season 2 picks up after Luke and his friends escaped from Dennison at the end of the first season. Rather than simply trying to move on from what happened to them, the group are now searching for a way to stop the Institute completely and prevent other children from being subjected to the same treatment.

At the same time, the Director is working on rebuilding the organisation and turns to new ally Nolan Reeves for help. Sigsby is now a fugitive following the events of Season 1, but she is also looking for a way back into the Institute, putting several of the show’s main players on a path towards each other again.
The first season adapted Stephen King’s 2019 novel, but Season 2 takes the story beyond the book, meaning even viewers familiar with King’s original story will not know exactly where Luke’s fight against the Institute is heading next.
Who Does Alfie Allen Play in The Institute Season 2?
Alfie Allen joins Season 2 as Nolan Reeves, an eccentric European tech billionaire who is one of the Institute’s financial backers. The new trailer gives us the first extended footage of the character as he becomes involved in the search for Luke and begins looking for information that could expose his weaknesses.

Nolan appears set to play an important role in the Institute’s attempts to recover after what happened at Dennison. The Director brings him in as an ally to help rebuild the organisation, although his own ambitions suggest there could be more to his involvement than simply providing financial support. Allen is best known for playing Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones, with his arrival adding a major new character to the second season.
Who Is Returning for The Institute Season 2?
Joe Freeman returns as Luke Ellis, with Ben Barnes back as Tim Jamieson and Mary-Louise Parker returning as Ms. Sigsby. Simone Miller will also return as Kalisha, alongside Fionn Laird as Nicky, Arlen So as George, Robert Joy as Dr. Hendricks and Hannah Galway as Wendy.

Stephen King remains an executive producer on the series alongside Jack Bender, Benjamin Cavell, Gary Barber, Sam Sheridan, Ed Redlich and Michael Mahoney. Cavell wrote the television adaptation, while Bender returns to direct.
When Is The Institute Season 2 Released in the UK?
The Institute Season 2 premieres on Sunday, 8 November on MGM+, including in the UK. MGM+ is available to UK viewers through Prime Video as an add-on subscription, so viewers will be able to watch the new season through the MGM+ channel on Prime Video.
The platform has not yet confirmed the full weekly release schedule for Season 2, but the November premiere puts the series back on screens little more than a year after its first season.
What Does The Institute Season 2 Trailer Reveal?
The extended trailer makes it clear that the Institute is far from finished. Luke and his friends may have escaped, but they now have to work out how to fight an organisation with the resources to rebuild and continue operating, while Nolan Reeves arrives with money, influence and a very clear interest in finding Luke.
There is also plenty of Sigsby in the footage, with her now on the run but clearly not finished with the Institute. Luke is trying to bring the organisation down, the Director is working to rebuild it and Sigsby is looking for a way back in, giving Season 2 plenty of tension from the start.
For CultureCues, we really enjoyed the first season of The Institute, so we are very happy to see this one returning so soon. Taking the story beyond Stephen King’s novel also gives Season 2 a lot more freedom, because we genuinely do not know where Luke’s story is going from here. Alfie Allen is a brilliant addition too, and Nolan already looks like someone who could cause a lot of problems for Luke and the others. The Institute clearly is not finished with them yet, and after that first season, neither are we.
The Institute Season 2 premieres on MGM+ in the UK on 8 November.
