Black Doves is officially back this November, with Netflix confirming the Season 2 release date alongside a first trailer featuring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. Knightley is back as Helen, who is still passing government secrets to the Black Doves while her husband Wallace prepares to become prime minister, with Whishaw once again playing former high-end triggerman Sam.

When Is Black Doves Season 2 Released?

Black Doves Season 2 will be released globally on Netflix on 5 November, with all six episodes available at once. The new season picks up after the events of last Christmas, with Helen now in an even more difficult position as Wallace moves closer to Downing Street. At the same time, her handler Reed, played by Sarah Lancashire, becomes caught up in a plot threatening her position within the Black Doves.

Sam is also struggling after the events of Season 1, having been pulled back into the criminal world and left the possibility of a life with Michael behind. His path eventually crosses with Helen’s again as the pair begin looking for answers.

What Happens in Black Doves Season 2?

The new trailer shows Helen continuing her work for the Black Doves while trying to keep her double life hidden as Wallace prepares to become prime minister. Reed’s disappearance leaves Helen without one of her closest professional allies, while the Black Doves themselves appear to be under increasing pressure.

Sam, meanwhile, is in trouble of his own and becomes involved with a mysterious man who helps him out of prison. Helen and Sam are soon reunited as they investigate what is happening around Reed and the wider organisation, with the trailer teasing plenty more fights, secrets and betrayals along the way.

The official synopsis reads: “In S2, Helen is still betraying her nation’s secrets to the covert organization she serves, the Black Doves. But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband, Wallace, preparing to become prime minister, she’s walking a more treacherous line than ever.”

Who Is Returning for Black Doves Season 2?

Keira Knightley returns as Helen, with Ben Whishaw back as Sam and Sarah Lancashire returning as Reed. Andrew Buchan also returns as Wallace, alongside Gabrielle Creevy as Eleanor, Ella Lily Hyland as Williams and Kathryn Hunter as Lenny.

Season 2 also brings several new faces into the story. Ambika Mod joins as Laila, a Black Doves agent described as acerbic and anarchic, while Babou Ceesay plays Black Doves executive Mr Conteh. Sam Riley appears as Patrick, a mysterious emissary who offers Sam a lifeline, and Neve Campbell joins as US defence envoy Cecile Mason.

For CultureCues, we absolutely loved the first season of Black Doves, so this trailer has made us even more excited for its return. It looks bigger, darker and even more action-packed this time around, while still keeping the humour and chemistry that made Season 1 so much fun. We are especially excited to see Ambika Mod joining the series, because yes, we love her, and give us more women kicking ass in spy thrillers and we’ll be happy. Keira Knightley looks incredible again, Ben Whishaw is back in trouble, and Season 2 already looks like it could be even better than the first. Bonfire Night plans: cancelled.
