Filming has begun on ITV’s new four-part drama Bad Blood, with Iain Glen leading a newly confirmed cast in the story of the infected blood scandal. Written by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Peter Moffat, the drama will examine how more than 30,000 people were given contaminated blood and blood products between the 1970s and early 1990s, resulting in chronic illnesses and more than 3,000 deaths. Moffat has worked closely with victims of the scandal and their families while developing the series, which will also follow the decades-long fight for truth and justice.

Who Is in the Bad Blood Cast?

Iain Glen leads the cast alongside Ben Chaplin, Susan Lynch, Luke Treadaway, Patrick Fabian, Precious Wura Alabi, Hannah McClean, Joe Absolom, Ron Cook, Peter Sullivan and Cal MacAninch.

The four-part drama comes from World Productions, the company behind Line of Duty, The Bombing of Pan Am 103, Malpractice and Until I Kill You. Julia Ford directs, with Abi Bach producing and Simon Heath, Joe Williams, Annabel Jones, Ford and Moffat among the executive producers.

What Is Bad Blood About?

The story centres on four boys attending Treloar’s, a boarding school for disabled children which had an attached specialist NHS centre for people with haemophilia. While there, the boys are given Factor VIII, a treatment intended to offer greater freedom and longer lives, but they are unknowingly exposed to contaminated blood products during medical trials.

As information begins to emerge about the transmission of Hepatitis C and AIDS, the drama will examine failures within both government and the medical establishment, alongside the experiences of those affected and the subsequent campaign to uncover what happened.

Moffat said working with those affected had been “deeply humbling”, adding that the drama is intended as a testament to the victims and families who spent decades fighting for justice.

When Will Bad Blood Be on ITV?

ITV has not yet announced a release date for Bad Blood, with filming now underway. The drama will air on ITV and STV and will also be available to stream through ITVX and STV Player, meaning Scottish viewers will be able to watch through STV when the series arrives.
