Andrew Haigh’s new drama A Long Winter has officially set its UK release date, with the film heading to cinemas on 15 January 2027 following its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival this October. The latest film from the director of All of Us Strangers stars Fred Hechinger alongside Caitríona Balfe, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Kit Connor and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. Filmed on location in Alberta, Canada, the story takes viewers to the Rocky Mountains in 1951 for an emotional mystery surrounding the disappearance of a mother and the family left searching for her.

When Is A Long Winter Released in the UK?

A Long Winter will be released in UK cinemas on 15 January 2027 through MUBI. Before its wider release, the film will have its UK premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on 14 October 2026. The film has already screened at the Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, giving audiences their first look at Haigh’s follow-up to All of Us Strangers ahead of its arrival in the UK.

What Is A Long Winter About?

Set high in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains in 1951, the film follows Mike, played by Fred Hechinger, after his mother suddenly disappears into the wilderness. Alongside his complicated father and members of their small mountain community, Mike sets out to find her as the harsh winter closes in around them.

The search becomes a much more personal journey for Mike, touching on family, loss, belonging and what it takes to keep going when his life is thrown into uncertainty. The snowy landscape also plays a major role in the film, with the story unfolding against an isolated and unforgiving mountain setting.

Who Is in the A Long Winter Cast?

Fred Hechinger leads the film as Mike, with Caitríona Balfe, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Kit Connor and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai also starring.

Haigh directs from a story by Colm Tóibín, marking his latest feature after All of Us Strangers. His previous work also includes Weekend, 45 Years, Looking and The North Water. Speaking about the film, Haigh has described A Long Winter as something of a bookend to themes he has explored throughout his career, including childhood, absence and loss.

For CultureCues, we have been looking forward to seeing what Andrew Haigh would do after All of Us Strangers, and A Long Winter already sounds like another emotional one. The snowy setting, family story and mystery around the disappearance all have us interested, and the cast is excellent. I’ll be catching this one at the BFI London Film Festival before its wider cinema release in January, so we might need to prepare ourselves emotionally first.
