Lindsay Lohan and Henry Golding are teaming up for a new Netflix romance, with Return to You bringing Lohan back together with the director behind two of her best-known films. Lohan will star opposite Golding in the 2008-set romantic feature and will also serve as a producer. Mark Waters, who previously directed her in Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, is taking the helm from a screenplay by Eric Champnella, marking another reunion between the pair more than two decades after those films.

What Is Return to You About?

Return to You follows a successful but lonely attorney, played by Lohan, who mistakenly receives an emotional DVD recorded by a dying woman for her husband, played by Golding. With only the information contained in the recording to guide her, she sets out to find him. The film’s 2008 setting also places the DVD at the centre of the story rather than smartphones or social media, giving the romance a slightly nostalgic starting point as Lohan’s character follows the clues left behind in the message.

Lindsay Lohan Reunites With Mean Girls Director Mark Waters

The project brings Lohan and Waters back together after Freaky Friday in 2003 and Mean Girls in 2004, two films that became major parts of her early career. Lohan later returned as Anna Coleman alongside Jamie Lee Curtis in 2025 sequel Freakier Friday, although that film was directed by Nisha Ganatra.

Waters has also continued working in the romance space, recently directing Netflix’s La Dolce Villa. Lohan, meanwhile, has built up her own run of Netflix romantic films in recent years with Falling for Christmas, Irish Wish and Our Little Secret.

Who Else Is Behind Return to You?

Lohan will produce Return to You alongside Brad Krevoy, who previously worked with her on Falling for Christmas and Irish Wish. Olivia Krevoy, Jimmy Townsend, Galen Fletcher and writer Eric Champnella are executive producers.

Golding also brings plenty of romance experience to the film following roles in Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas, Monsoon and Daniela Forever. His more recent credits include Nine Perfect Strangers, Another Simple Favor and Netflix’s The Old Guard 2.

For CultureCues, this is giving us exactly the kind of rom-com nostalgia we want. Lindsay Lohan was such a huge part of 2000s romantic comedies, so putting her back in that world with a story set in 2008 already feels like it is taking us straight back there. We love this for Lindsay, and we love Henry Golding too, especially when he is in rom-com territory, so pairing the two of them together is a very easy sell. Reuniting Lohan with Mark Waters only makes it better. Rom-coms really are back, and we are so ready for this one.

Return to You is coming to Netflix, with a release date still to be announced.
