Sky has announced a huge new cast for its upcoming adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with Jonathan Pryce, James D’Arcy, Lena Olin and Camille Cottin among the latest names joining the eight-part mystery thriller. The new series, based on Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium novels, has officially begun filming in Sweden and Lithuania, with David Oyelowo and Viola Prettejohn leading the cast as Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander.
The new Sky Original will bring Larsson’s famous story into the present day, following journalist Mikael Blomkvist (David Oyelowo) and hacker Lisbeth Salander (Viola Prettejohn) as they investigate a decades-old disappearance connected to one of Sweden’s wealthiest and most powerful families.
Produced by Left Bank Pictures, the company behind The Crown and Dept Q, the series promises a fresh adaptation of the original novel, exploring themes of power, corruption and secrecy in today’s increasingly connected world.
Who Is Joining The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Cast?
Leading the latest casting announcements is Slow Horses and The Crown star Jonathan Pryce, who will play Henrik Vanger, the wealthy industrialist whose family holds the key to the mystery. James D’Arcy, known for Oppenheimer, joins as Martin Vanger, with Lena Olin playing Isabella Vanger. French actress Camille Cottin, best known for Call My Agent!, will take on the role of Erika Berger, while Alun Armstrong joins as Harald Vanger. Jessica Raine (The Devil’s Hour) has been cast as Cecilia Vanger, alongside Paul Ready (The Terror) as Birger Vanger.

The supporting cast also includes Ariyon Bakare as Palmgren, Lee Ross as DI Gustaf Morell, Steve Wall as Otto Falk, Justin Salinger as Bjurman, Allan Corduner as Dirch Frode, Rochenda Sandall as Armansky and Naomi Townsend as Mimmi Wu. A younger generation of the Vanger family will also feature in the drama, with Ingrid Keighley playing young Harriet Vanger, Danny Horn as young Henrik and Lucy Brown as young Isabella, alongside further additions to the ensemble.
What Is Sky’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo About?
Based on the first book in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follows disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist as he becomes involved in investigating the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, who vanished more than 30 years ago from her family’s secluded island home.
Working alongside brilliant but uncompromising hacker Lisbeth Salander, Mikael begins uncovering disturbing secrets buried within the wealthy Vanger family. As their investigation progresses, the pair discover that the danger surrounding Harriet’s disappearance may not be confined to the past. The new adaptation will retain the central mystery and characters from Larsson’s novel while moving the story into a modern setting, examining how technology has changed the ways people conceal information, abuse power and uncover the truth.
The original book has previously been adapted for the screen, including the 2009 Swedish film starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist, followed by David Fincher’s 2011 English-language adaptation starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig.
When Will The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Be Released on Sky?
Filming is now underway in Sweden and Lithuania, although Sky has yet to announce an official release date for the eight-part series. The adaptation is written and executive produced by Amanda Coe (The Trial of Christine Keeler), Steve Lightfoot (Behind Her Eyes) and Angela LaManna (The Haunting of Bly Manor), with King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green leading the directing team alongside Andrea Harkin and Amy Neil.
Speaking about the latest additions to the cast, Sky’s Managing Director of Scripted Originals, Meghan Lyvers, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome such an extraordinary ensemble cast to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.”
For CultureCues, we’ve always been fans of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, so we’re looking forward to seeing Sky’s take on the story. The books and films have already set a pretty high bar, but having eight episodes gives the series a chance to spend more time with the characters and all those secrets buried within the Vanger family. We’re also interested to see how bringing the story into the present day changes things, especially when Lisbeth’s hacking skills are such a big part of it. Hopefully, Sky has another great crime thriller on its hands.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is currently filming in Sweden and Lithuania and will premiere on Sky, with a release date yet to be announce
