ITV has officially renewed its hit crime drama Gone for a second series, with Eve Myles returning as Detective Sergeant Annie Cassidy and Keeley Hawes joining the cast for a brand-new investigation. The six-part drama will see Annie investigating a respected paediatric surgeon who may be concealing the truth about a series of historical crimes, with filming set to take place in Bristol in 2027.

The renewal follows the success of the first series, which became one of ITVX’s biggest new drama launches, accumulating an impressive 31 million streams. Written by George Kay, whose previous credits include The Long Shadow, Hijack and Lupin, the psychological thriller originally starred Myles alongside David Morrissey, following the disappearance of a headmaster’s wife and the investigation that followed.

Now, with the second series officially commissioned, Annie Cassidy will return to investigate another complicated case, this time with Keeley Hawes at the centre of the mystery.

What Will Happen in Gone Series 2?

The new series will introduce Keeley Hawes as Dr Ruth Manning, a highly respected paediatric surgeon working at Bristol’s Makeway Hospital. Known for her dedication to her patients, Ruth comes under investigation when DS Annie Cassidy begins to suspect that she may be hiding the truth about a series of historical crimes.

As Annie starts digging into Ruth’s past, her investigation will uncover secrets that threaten to tear a family apart, raising questions about just how far someone might go to protect the people they care about.

Hawes, whose previous television credits include Bodyguard, The Durrells, Miss Austen and The Assassin, joins Myles for the new six-part story, with further casting details expected to be announced. Speaking about returning to the role, Eve Myles said: “I can’t wait to get back to Annie! A very special project and character. I’m really excited to explore a new story with a brilliant cast!”

Series creator George Kay, who will once again write the drama, also shared his excitement about working with Hawes, “I’m thrilled to be back in the world of DS Annie Cassidy, played by Eve Myles, who brings such wit and depth to all her roles. This time she’ll be trying to find the truth about the character of Ruth Manning, a high-end paediatric surgeon played by the brilliant Keeley Hawes, who I’ve hoped to work with for so long and now finally get the chance.

When Will Gone Series 2 Be Released?

Although ITV has confirmed that Gone will return, an official release date has not yet been announced. Filming is scheduled to take place in Bristol in 2027, meaning viewers will have a little longer to wait before Annie Cassidy returns to screens. The second series will premiere on ITV and STV, with episodes also available to stream on ITVX and STV Player.

The drama will once again be produced by New Pictures and Observatory Pictures, with George Kay returning as writer. The series also continues to draw inspiration from the book To Hunt a Killer and the real-life investigative work of former Detective Superintendent Julie Mackay and ITV crime correspondent Robert Murphy, who both serve as consultants.

For CultureCues, it’s great to hear that Gone is coming back for another series, with Eve Myles returning as Annie Cassidy. The first series had us hooked with its gripping mystery, so we’re looking forward to seeing what this new case has in store. We’re also big fans of Keeley Hawes, who is always brilliant in these kinds of dramas, and having her join the cast makes the new series even more exciting. We can’t wait!

Gone series 2 will air on ITV and STV, in 2027 with an official release date yet to be confirmed.
