ITV has picked up The Galway Bay Murders, a new six-part crime drama starring Kate Mulgrew and Colm Meaney that will air on ITV1 and ITVX. Mulgrew plays Nora Savage, a former NYPD detective who heads to the west of Ireland hoping for a quieter life after a difficult period in her past. That plan does not last long. When the body of a young woman is discovered in a bog, Nora is drawn into the investigation alongside the local Garda team.

The case eventually leads them to Free Farm, an organisation where young people live and work together around sustainable farming and scientific research. As the investigation continues, secrets and divided loyalties begin coming to the surface, leaving Nora trying to work out what happened and who may be willing to go further to keep the truth hidden.

Colm Meaney also stars, with John Connors, India Mullen, Cillian O’Sullivan and Jack Rowan among the wider cast. The drama is created and written by Eithne Verling, a former archaeologist and museum curator with a personal connection to Galway and Connemara, and marks her television writing debut. All six episodes were written specifically for Mulgrew after the pair met in Galway and became friends.

The series comes from Two Cities Television, part of STV Studios and the production company behind Blue Lights, alongside Keeper Pictures and AS I AM Productions. Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy direct, with Irish broadcaster RTÉ originally commissioning the drama. There is no ITV transmission date yet, but the series will consist of six hour-long episodes and will be available on ITV1 and ITVX when it arrives.

For CultureCues, this is definitely one we’ll be watching. We love a good crime drama, and with Kate Mulgrew leading the cast and the team behind Blue Lights involved, this one sounds like it will be a fab watch. We also love seeing another production from STV Studios heading to a big ITV audience, so we’re looking forward to hearing when this one will finally air.

The Galway Bay Murders will air on ITV1 and STV, and stream on ITVX and STV Player.
