Only Fools and Horses: The Lost Archive has already been renewed for a second series before the new documentary has even made its television debut. The first series launches tonight, Tuesday 20 October, at 9pm on U&GOLD and opens up previously unseen material from more than ten episodes of the much-loved sitcom. That includes footage from favourites such as The Jolly Boys’ Outing and Mother Nature’s Son, with Sir David Jason among those looking back at scenes that never made it to television.

If you’re wondering where to actually watch it, U&GOLD is a subscription channel rather than a free to air one. It is available through Sky TV, while viewers without Sky can also watch through NOW with an Entertainment Membership.

Some of the newly discovered footage from The Jolly Boys’ Outing gives fans more from the gang’s trip to Margate, including an extended look at the coach journey and the full footage from their rollercoaster ride at Dreamland. Another unearthed scene shows Raquel’s audition from The Class of ’62, which was referenced in the 1991 episode but never originally broadcast.

And there is already more on the way. Series 2 will consist of two episodes and reveal more than 30 additional unseen moments from the archive, including material from later specials such as Time on Our Hands.

Sir David Jason will return alongside Tessa Peake-Jones, Gwyneth Strong and Sue Holderness as they react to the rediscovered footage and share memories from their time on the series. Long-time director Tony Dow and video editor Chris Wadworth will also contribute.

The documentary arrives as Only Fools and Horses celebrates its 45th anniversary, with the archive material offering fans a chance to see scenes that were filmed but removed from finished episodes, often because of running-time restrictions.

There could even be more life for some of that footage beyond the documentary. Comedy archive specialist Richard Latto, who helped uncover the material, has spoken about the possibility of using the newly digitised scenes as part of restored or extended versions of episodes in the future.

For CultureCues, finding this much unseen Only Fools and Horses footage after all these years is pretty incredible, especially when it comes from episodes people have watched over and over again. Getting new material from The Jolly Boys’ Outing alone is enough to make this worth watching, and knowing there are already another 30-plus moments waiting for Series 2 makes it even better. Lovely jubbly.

Only Fools and Horses: The Lost Archive begins tonight, Tuesday 20 October, at 9pm on U&GOLD, and is also available through Sky and NOW.
