Sicario 3 is officially moving forward, with Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin all set to return for the third film in the crime thriller franchise. The project has also found its director in Padraic McKinley, with Oscar-nominated writer Steven Knight currently working on the screenplay ahead of plans to begin filming in early 2027.
The film will mark Blunt’s first return to the franchise since Denis Villeneuve’s original Sicario in 2015. Del Toro and Brolin both came back for 2018 sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado, but Blunt’s Kate Macer was absent, making the third film the first time all three original leads will be reunited since the story began more than a decade ago. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the returning cast, director and production plans now give us a much clearer picture of where the long-discussed third film stands.
Who Is Returning for Sicario 3?
Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin are all set to return for Sicario 3. Blunt starred in the first film as FBI agent Kate Macer, who became part of a government task force targeting a Mexican drug cartel, while del Toro played Alejandro Gillick and Brolin starred as CIA officer Matt Graver. Their uneasy alliance was at the centre of the original film, with Kate gradually discovering just how far the operation was prepared to go.
Who Is Directing Sicario 3?
Padraic McKinley is attached to direct Sicario 3 after Black Label Media and Thunder Road carried out a wider search for the filmmaker who would take on the next instalment. McKinley, whose credits include The Weight, is now working alongside Steven Knight as development continues, with the screenplay also taking notes from the returning cast before production begins.
Knight has written films including Spencer and Eastern Promises and is also the creator of Peaky Blinders. The Sicariofranchise itself was created by Taylor Sheridan, who wrote both the 2015 film and Day of the Soldado. Denis Villeneuve directed the original, while Stefano Sollima took over for the second film, meaning McKinley will become the third director to take on the franchise.
What Will Sicario 3 Be About?
Plot details for Sicario 3 have not been revealed, so we still do not know what brings Kate Macer back into the story or where Alejandro and Matt will be when the film begins. The confirmation that Blunt, del Toro and Brolin are all returning does suggest that the third film will reconnect directly with the characters and relationships established in the original rather than continuing only with Alejandro and Matt.

The first Sicario followed Kate as she was pulled into an operation that repeatedly tested her understanding of the law and the people she was working alongside. Day of the Soldado then focused much more heavily on Alejandro and Matt, with Kate no longer part of the story. Her return leaves plenty of questions about what has happened to her since the first film and why she would become involved with the pair again, but those details are likely to remain under wraps until production gets further underway.
When Will Sicario 3 Be Released?
Sicario 3 does not currently have an official release date, although the plan is for filming to begin at the start of 2027. That means the project is now moving beyond years of discussion and development, but it is still too early to know when audiences will actually see the finished film in cinemas.
Lionsgate released the first two films, but a distributor for the third has not yet been confirmed. The project is expected to be taken to market, with several studios already showing interest, so more details about where the film will land and when it could be released should become clearer as production approaches.
For CultureCues, Emily Blunt returning is the part we are most excited about. Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin were both strong enough to carry Day of the Soldado, but Kate was such an important part of the original Sicario that having all three of them back together makes the third film much more appealing. We are also very interested to see what brings Kate back into contact with Alejandro and Matt after everything she experienced in the first film. There is still a lot we do not know about the story, but with the three leads now committed, a director in place and filming planned for early 2027, Sicario 3 finally looks ready to happen.
Sicario 3 is officially moving forward, with Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin returning.
