Bad news for anyone still invested in Staten and Quinn’s love story: Ransom Canyon has been cancelled by Netflix after two seasons, meaning there will be no Season 3. The Texas-set romantic drama, starring Josh Duhamel as Staten Kirkland and Minka Kelly as Quinn O’Grady, returned for its second season in July but Netflix has now decided not to continue the series. The cancellation comes just over a month after Season 2 arrived, bringing an unexpectedly early end to the story inspired by Jodi Thomas’ book series.

Why Was Ransom Canyon Cancelled?

Netflix has not publicly given a specific reason for cancelling Ransom Canyon, but the show’s viewing figures offer some indication of what may have contributed to the decision.

Season 1 premiered in April 2025 and spent five weeks in Netflix’s Top 10, while Season 2 remained there for three weeks. The second season also saw a noticeable drop in its opening numbers, falling from around 7.2 million views for Season 1’s first week to 4.1 million for Season 2, a decline of roughly 43%.

That does not mean Netflix has confirmed falling viewership as the reason for cancellation, but performance across subsequent seasons is an important factor for streaming renewals. With Ransom Canyon attracting fewer viewers on its return, Netflix ultimately chose not to order a third season.

Was Ransom Canyon Season 3 Ever Confirmed?

No. Netflix had not announced Ransom Canyon Season 3 before confirming the cancellation, so the series officially ends with its second season. The turnaround was fairly quick too. Season 2 premiered on 23 July 2026, with the cancellation following in September. Although long gaps between seasons can sometimes contribute to audiences dropping off streaming shows, Ransom Canyon returned around 16 months after its first season, which is relatively standard by current streaming timelines.

What Was Ransom Canyon About?

Created by April Blair and based on Jodi Thomas’ novels, Ransom Canyon followed several ranching families living in a small Texas town where land, family history and romance regularly collided.

Season 2 continued Staten Kirkland’s fight to reclaim control of the Double K Ranch after losing his position as trustee, while Quinn was forced to decide whether her future belonged in Ransom Canyon with Staten or back in New York. The series also starred Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher and Casey W. Johnson, with Philip Winchester and Justin Johnson Cortez also appearing.

What Has Minka Kelly Said About the Cancellation?

Minka Kelly has already shared a goodbye to the series, looking back on her time with the cast and crew. Posting on Instagram alongside a video with Josh Duhamel, she wrote that she was “appreciating this little trip down memory lane as we say farewell”, adding: “All good things must come to an end. And so it is.” She continued: “Thank you all for giving us two beautiful seasons. I love you forever my Ransom Canyon family!”

The cancellation also brings an end to a production that had a significant presence in New Mexico, where the show was filmed and employed hundreds of local crew members.

Could Ransom Canyon Ever Return?

At the moment, there is no indication that Netflix plans to reverse the decision or continue Ransom Canyon elsewhere. The story does have plenty of source material behind it thanks to Jodi Thomas’ book series, but any future continuation would require a new decision from Netflix or another company taking an interest in the property. For now, Season 2 is the end of Staten and Quinn’s onscreen story.

For CultureCues, we are genuinely disappointed by this one. We were still very invested in Staten and Quinn by the end of Season 2, and we would have happily spent more time in Ransom Canyon. Josh Duhamel in that cowboy hat definitely deserved at least another season. It is a shame Netflix has ended the series this early. Goodbye, Staten’s cowboy hat. You will be missed.
