The Great British Bake Off returned for Dessert Week on Tuesday night, with the remaining bakers facing three pudding challenges before another contestant was asked to leave the tent. The episode began with a first for Bake Off, as the Signature challenge used staggered start times for eight self-saucing puddings. Gary was first to begin while Yannis had to wait until last, and it was Connie who made the biggest impression, earning a Hollywood Handshake for her chocolate orange self-saucing puddings.

The Technical brought back the Gingham Shrouded Pantry, with Nigella Lawson asking the bakers to make a bread and butter pudding using their own choice of flavours. Moyin finished last, Yannis came seventh and Gary took first place.

For the Showstopper, the bakers had to create a full trolley of retro desserts featuring at least three different puddings and a baked element. The tent was filled with everything from Black Forest Gateaux and trifles to pineapple upside-down cake, before the judges had to decide who had done enough to stay.

Who Left Bake Off During Dessert Week?

Yannis became the latest baker to leave The Great British Bake Off after struggling across Dessert Week. His retro British dessert trolley included a Black Forest Gateaux and sticky toffee pudding, but the judges found problems with both. His cream had split on the gateaux, while the sticky toffee pudding was described as too dense.

After his elimination, Yannis said: “I grew up watching this programme and being here for five weeks is surreal. I will be very proud of that and it’s been absolutely wonderful.” He later described leaving as “bittersweet”, explaining that filming alongside his full-time work as a paediatric doctor, including 12-hour shifts and nights, had been exhausting.

Who Was Star Baker During Dessert Week?

Connie was named Star Baker after a week that began with a Hollywood Handshake for her Signature puddings. Her Showstopper was not perfect, with the judges finding some issues with her pineapple upside-down cake and apple and pear pie, but her performance across all three challenges was enough to put her at the top of the week.

Gary also had a strong episode after winning the Technical, while Tom received particularly high praise for his cocktail-themed dessert trolley. Nigella was so impressed with his Mojito-layered pavlova that she told him she wanted the recipe.

For CultureCues, Dessert Week really put everyone through it. Connie getting a Hollywood Handshake and then ending the episode as Star Baker was lovely to see, while Yannis going home was such a shame. Hearing that he was doing all of this alongside 12-hour shifts and nights as a paediatric doctor is honestly wild, so getting this far is definitely something to be proud of. We’ll be watching again next week to see who can rise to the occasion.

The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
