Thriller and romance fans might want to keep an eye on this one. M. Night Shyamalan is heading back to cinemas with Remain, a new supernatural romantic thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, and Warner Bros. has now released the first teaser trailer and poster.

The film brings Shyamalan together with The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks, with the pair developing the story before Shyamalan wrote and directed the film. Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who moves to a small coastal town for work and meets a mysterious young woman named Wren, played by Dynevor. Naturally, things do not stay straightforward for long.

What Is Remain About?

The official synopsis follows Tate as he arrives in a coastal town to complete his latest architectural project, where meeting Wren begins to pull him out of his shell. Their connection soon becomes tied to a deadly mystery surrounding the town, with the trailer making it clear that there is much more going on than Tate initially understands.

The first footage keeps most of the answers hidden, but there are already plenty of questions around Wren and what exactly Tate has become involved in. She appears to disappear during one moment in the trailer, while the changing visuals and increasingly uneasy tone suggest the romance is only one part of the story.

Who Is in the Remain Cast?

Jake Gyllenhaal leads as Tate Gordon, with Phoebe Dynevor playing Wren. Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders also star, although details about their characters have not been revealed.

Behind the camera, Shyamalan produces alongside Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park, with Nicholas Sparks serving as executive producer. James Newton Howard is composing the score, while Adolpho Veloso serves as director of photography.

Is Remain Based on a Nicholas Sparks Book?

Not exactly. Remain comes from a story developed by Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks, rather than being a direct adaptation of an existing Sparks novel. Shyamalan then wrote the screenplay and directs the film.

It is an interesting combination given how closely Sparks is associated with romance and Shyamalan with supernatural mysteries and twists. The trailer already looks like it is bringing those two sides together, with Tate and Wren’s relationship sitting at the centre of a story where something clearly is not quite right.

When Is Remain Released in the UK?

Remain will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 5 February 2027 through Warner Bros. Pictures. The studio has confirmed it will be a cinema release, with no streaming date announced.

Night Shyamalan does, while we are equally happy to sit down with any Nicholas Sparks romance. Putting the two together with Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor is an easy yes from us. The trailer is keeping the mystery pretty tightly guarded, and we are already trying to work out exactly what is going on with Wren. Whatever the answer is, we will be there in February to find out.
