Fleetwood Mac are getting their first fully authorised documentary, with Fleetwood Mac: The Chain set to tell the band’s story in their own words through new interviews, archive material and never-before-seen footage. The Apple Original Films documentary will premiere globally on Apple TV on Friday 29 January 2027. Directed by five-time Academy Award nominee Frank Marshall, the film brings together the voices, memories and perspectives of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as it looks back across more than 50 years of Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood Mac Tell Their Own Story

Fleetwood Mac: The Chain will trace the band’s history from the arrival of Buckingham and Nicks in 1974 through the records, tours, relationships and personal struggles that became part of Fleetwood Mac’s story. The documentary will include exclusive new interviews alongside material that has never previously been seen, looking at how the five members managed to keep making music together despite the tensions happening around them. Their story has become almost as famous as the songs themselves, with relationships ending, band members leaving and returning, and enormous success unfolding at the same time.

Fleetwood Mac have sold more than 220 million records worldwide, and the documentary will look at what each member brought to the group as well as what repeatedly pulled them back together when things threatened to fall apart.

Why Is the Documentary Called The Chain?

The title comes from “The Chain”, one of Fleetwood Mac’s most famous songs and the only track on Rumours credited to all five members. Apple says the song reflects the bond between Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, which makes it a pretty perfect title for a film about both the music they made together and everything that was happening behind the scenes.

The timing also gives the film another connection to Rumours, with Fleetwood Mac: The Chain arriving as the album celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2027.

Frank Marshall Directs the Documentary

Frank Marshall directs and produces the film through The Kennedy/Marshall Company, working alongside White Horse Pictures. Marshall’s previous documentary work includes music and cultural films, while White Horse Pictures has been behind projects including The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years and No Direction Home: Bob Dylan. Mark Monroe serves as writer and executive producer, with Nigel Sinclair, Nicholas Ferrall, Jeanne Elfant Festa and Aly Parker among the producers.

For CultureCues, this feels long overdue, so this announcement has already gone triple platinum in our group chat. We love Fleetwood Mac, so the fact we are finally getting a fully authorised documentary with new interviews and never-before-seen footage is very exciting. We cannot wait to see what has been pulled from the archives, especially with it arriving for the 50th anniversary of Rumours… You can go your own way, but we’ll be watching this one in January.
