HBO Max is taking fans back to Stars Hollow for the first authorised documentary about Gilmore Girls, more than 25 years after Lorelai and Rory first arrived on television. The currently untitled film is now in production, with Lauren Graham, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino all taking part. The documentary will offer an insider view of how Gilmore Girls was created and became a cross-generational favourite long after its original seven-season run ended. Graham will appear alongside further cast and crew members, although the remaining contributors have not yet been revealed.
Fans can expect never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and original script pages from the series. The film will explore the collaboration between its creators, cast and crew, looking at what made Stars Hollow so loved by generations of viewers and kept us returning every autumn.
Bonni Cohen (Athlete A and An Inconvenient Sequel), will direct. The documentary is produced by This Machine Filmworks in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino serve as executive producers alongside Mark Blatty, Jane Cha Cutler, R.J. Cutler, Elise Pearlstein and Trevor Smith. Cohen and Melissa Robledo are producers.
The project is separate from the independently produced documentary announced as Searching for Stars Hollow and later retitled Drink Coffee, Talk Fast. It features Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, Chad Michael Murray and Keiko Agena, but does not currently include Graham or Sherman-Palladino.
Gilmore Girls originally aired from 2000 to 2007, following Lorelai and Rory Gilmore through life, family and relationships in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. Netflix later reunited the cast for the four-part revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in 2016.

As huge Gilmore Girls fans, we are ridiculously excited to see Lauren Graham and Amy Sherman-Palladino opening the archives, and the promise of unseen outtakes, script pages and behind-the-scenes footage has us ready to grab a coffee from Luke’s and rewatch every episode. We only hope more familiar faces join them because this could become a full Stars Hollow reunion. Oy with the release date already!
