Channel 4 has finally revealed the twist behind Bradley Walsh’s new one-off game show Million Pound Shot, and contestants will quite literally be putting their money where their mouth is. Airing on Sunday 1 November at 9pm, the programme will see three contestants compete in front of a live studio audience for the chance to win £1 million. The big difference is that they will be using their own money along the way, with Channel 4 describing the format as a British television first.

Contestants will bring their own bank cards and choose how much they want to bet depending on how confident they are in their answers to general knowledge questions. Correct answers earn Bet Balls carrying a monetary value, which can either be cashed out or fired into the Million Pound Shot Machine in an attempt to win the jackpot.

The format had been kept under wraps ahead of transmission, which led to plenty of speculation online about what Channel 4 was actually planning. Some viewers even wondered whether the entire programme could turn out to be an elaborate television hoax, but the broadcaster has now confirmed that the gamble really is at the centre of the show.

Walsh, best known to quiz fans as the host of The Chase, said the format caught his attention straight away. “This programme is unlike anything we’ve seen on British TV before, and when I heard about this format I thought it was one of the most original and surprising quiz shows I’d ever encountered,” he said. “Alongside playing with their own money, there are more twists and turns along the way. I’m excited for everyone to see how it plays out.”

He added that contestants will need plenty of confidence if they want to go all the way, saying: “This game is all about confidence and bravado. Putting your money where your mouth is will not be simple when it’s your own cold hard cash.”

For CultureCues, this is quite a twist on the usual game show format. Asking contestants to put their own money on the line seems slightly mad, but it definitely makes the whole thing more interesting. There is a big difference between taking a punt with the show’s money and deciding how much of your own cash you are willing to risk, especially with £1 million sitting at the end of it. Add Bradley Walsh into the mix and this could be a really fun watch, although we have a feeling some of those decisions are going to be seriously tense.

Bradley Walsh’s Million Pound Shot airs Sunday 1 November at 9pm on Channel 4.
