It is official, Glee is coming back. Disney+ and Hulu have given a series order to a new version of the musical comedy, more than a decade after the doors of William McKinley High School closed for the final time. Original creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan are behind the new series, with 20th Television once again producing.

The news comes after Murphy spent the last few months talking about returning to the world of Glee. He revealed in September that the trio had finished writing a script and had already been in contact with around ten members of the original cast about potentially being involved.

No returning cast members have officially been announced yet, and details about the story are also being kept under wraps. Murphy previously described the project as a new incarnation of the show, rather than confirming exactly how it will connect to the original six seasons.

The original Glee premiered in 2009 and followed the New Directions show choir at William McKinley High School in Ohio. Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley, Dianna Agron, Darren Criss, Matthew Morrison and Jenna Ushkowitz were among the huge ensemble cast across its run, with the series becoming a major pop culture hit alongside the success of its music releases.

It ran for six seasons before ending in 2015, but has continued to find new audiences through streaming. Disney says the series still attracts around four million monthly listeners on Spotify, which perhaps explains why McKinley is opening its doors again.

Exactly which familiar faces might return remains one of the biggest questions. Chris Colfer recently said returning would be difficult without Naya Rivera, but also acknowledged how much Glee still means to its fans. Rivera died in 2020, while Cory Monteith died during the original run of the series in 2013.

For CultureCues, we loved Glee for a long time, and we’ll admit, watching some of it back now, some of those storylines are completely ridiculous, but that was also part of the fun. The songs, the performances and the sheer madness of it all made it such a massive show at the time, so we’re definitely interested to see what they do with it now and whether any of the original cast come back. Somewhere, Sue Sylvester is already preparing a speech… Gleeks, dust off the show choir playlist. We’re going back.

The new Glee series has been ordered by Disney+ and Hulu. A release date and cast have not yet been announced.
