This City Is Ours has already been renewed for a third series, with the BBC confirming the news before Series 2 has even premiered. The Liverpool-set crime drama will return for another eight hour-long episodes, with filming due to take place primarily in Liverpool in 2027. Stephen Butchard will return as lead writer after creating the series, while further casting for Series 3 will be announced at a later date.
The early renewal comes after a huge response to the first series, which launched in March 2025 and has since attracted an average audience of 6.3 million viewers. Its opening episode has now been watched by more than 8.4 million people, while almost three million viewers streamed the Series 1 finale before it aired on BBC One.
Before then, though, Series 2 is almost here. All eight new episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer from Sunday 25 October, with the series also airing on BBC One on Sunday and Monday nights at 9pm.
James Nelson-Joyce returns as Michael Kavanagh alongside Hannah Onslow as Diana Williams. Shaun Evans joins the cast as Ozzie Thompson, a former gangster recently released from prison, while Money Heist star Álvaro Morte will play Felipe. Jack McMullen, Julie Graham, Laura Aikman, Kevin Harvey, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Darci Shaw, Adam Abbou and Bobby Schofield are also returning.
Series 2 picks up shortly after the end of the first series, with Michael and Diana barely making it to Spain before they are pulled back into everything happening in Liverpool. Meanwhile, tensions within the remaining gang continue to grow, with Ozzie’s return bringing another problem for them to deal with.
Creator Stephen Butchard said the team had been determined to make Series 2 even better following the response to the first, adding that the early Series 3 commission might be a sign they had managed to do just that.
For CultureCues, this is such good news, especially before we have even seen Series 2. The first series was brilliant, James Nelson-Joyce was fantastic as Michael and we are really looking forward to getting back into this world on Sunday. Going into Series 2 knowing it definitely won’t be the end makes the return even better, and with a third series already confirmed, there is clearly plenty more to come from This City Is Ours.
This City Is Ours Series 2 arrives on BBC iPlayer on Sunday 25 October at 9pm on BBC One.
