A Different World is officially coming back for Season 2 at Netflix, with the renewal arriving just eight days after the sequel series premiered on 24 September. The new series follows Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest child of original A Different World characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Season 1 sees Deborah begin her first year at Hillman College and try to create her own identity away from the shadow of her parents, alongside a new group of students navigating friendships, relationships and college life.

The first season made Netflix’s English TV Top 10 following its launch, and showrunner Felicia Pride credited the quick renewal to the response from viewers. Pride said fans had been watching, rewatching and discussing the series online, adding that seeing different generations watching the show together had been especially meaningful.

Executive producer and director Debbie Allen also celebrated the news, saying the series had brought audiences “joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and HEART” and thanking viewers for helping it reach the worldwide Top 10.

Season 2 will pick up with Deborah and her Hillman classmates returning for their sophomore year after what Netflix describes as transformative summers. The new season will see them dealing with decisions made during their first year, uncertain futures, new relationships and friendships, with Pride also confirming that several of the cliffhangers left at the end of Season 1 will be addressed.

Season 1 also introduced Deborah’s close friends Rashida, Hazel, Amir and Kojo, alongside her complicated romantic life involving football star Shaquille and upperclassman Ellington. Characters from the original series also returned throughout the sequel as parents, professors, administrators and alumni.

There is no release date for A Different World Season 2 yet, with Netflix confirming only that the series will return for another year at Hillman.

For CultureCues, we’re very happy to see this one coming back. We’ve really enjoyed this new take on A Different World, so getting the Season 2 news just eight days after launch is a lovely surprise. Viewers clearly wanted more Hillman too, and we’re glad Netflix hasn’t kept us waiting long for the renewal. Now we just need to know when classes are back in session.

A Different World will return for Season 2 on Netflix.
