Zayn Malik has announced his fifth studio album, KONNAKOL, which is set for release on 17 April via Mercury Records/Island Records UK. The record follows 2024’s Room Under the Stairs and arrives ten years after Mind of Mine, the debut album that launched his solo career after One Direction, making this new chapter feel especially significant.

The new album looks set to mark a return to the R&B-heavy sound that first defined Zayn as a solo artist, while bringing in stronger South Asian musical influences. The title refers to konnakol, the South Indian Carnatic practice of creating percussive sounds with the voice, but Zayn has described the meaning as something much more personal, tied to heritage, identity and where he wants to go next.

The announcement comes after Zayn’s seven-night Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, where he previewed several unreleased tracks and teased new music was coming. The album artwork, shot by Nabil Elderkin, features Zayn’s face blurred with a snow leopard, imagery fans had already spotted in visuals during the residency.

Lead single Die For Me was released on 6 February, giving fans the first proper taste of this new chapter. After the more stripped-back sound of Room Under the Stairs, KONNAKOL feels like it could be a smart full-circle moment for Zayn: a return to the atmosphere of his debut, but with a clearer sense of who he is now as an artist. For longtime fans, that makes this one of his most exciting chapters in years.
