Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures has released the official trailer for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, a new action drama starring Mahershala Ali and written and directed by Bassam Tariq. The film brings Ali and Tariq back together after their planned Blade collaboration did not move forward, and this time, Ali finally gets to put those years of action training to use.
The official synopsis reads: “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother stars Mahershala Ali as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman who struggles to balance work, faith and fatherhood. When his wife dies, he embarks on a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children, confronting the forces closing in around him – and the beliefs threatening to unravel within.” The film’s title references an Islamic teaching about the love, care and respect owed to mothers. That meaning runs throughout Latif’s story as he deals with his wife’s death and takes responsibility for protecting the family she left behind.
The mission places him in direct opposition to influential faith leader Hwan Yoon, played by John Cho, leaving Latif fighting to keep his children safe. The cast also includes Giancarlo Esposito, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, Jahleel Kamara and Adia.
The trailer packs a punch, moving between Latif’s grief, his attempts to connect with his children and the brutal action waiting across Houston. Ali also gets to show off the blade skills he developed during more than a year of training for Marvel’s abandoned project. He has since explained that the film came together after Blade fell apart, giving Tariq the chance to build an original story around that preparation. Tariq previously directed Mogul Mowgli and recently worked on the Prime Video series Bait.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother will receive its world premiere in the Special Presentations programme at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It will then begin its US cinema release in New York and Los Angeles on 25 September before expanding during October.
For CultureCues, anything starring Mahershala Ali immediately has our attention. He is a phenomenal performer, and this already looks like another role that will give him plenty to work with. It will be incredibly satisfying to see him finally put that extensive blade training into action, and having the young children caught up in the danger gives the story even greater stakes. This may not be the Blade film many expected from Ali and Tariq, but it looks like they have created something even more personal together.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother opens in selected US cinemas on 25 September 2026 before expanding in October. A UK release date has not yet been announced.
