The Love Hypothesis fans, the wait is officially on. Prime Video has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance novel. Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman star as Olive Smith and Adam Carlsen, with the film set to stream globally on 23 September 2026.
Unveiled during Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest in Los Angeles, the teaser introduces Olive, a PhD candidate who finds herself kissing intimidating professor Adam Carlsen after discovering that her best friend Ahn has feelings for her former crush Jeremy. The plan is simple: convince Ahn that Olive has moved on.
Readers will immediately recognise the kiss from the book’s original cover. Olive and Adam then agree to fake a relationship, leaning straight into one of our favourite rom-com tropes. Of course, the more time they spend pretending, the less fake it all begins to feel, especially once real feelings get involved.

The teaser leans into the story’s academic setting with an educational-style narration explaining the science behind attraction. “Molecules stay in motion, vibrating and colliding until they find a match,” the narrator says. “And when they do, something miraculous happens. They form a bond. Isn’t science fun?”
Of course, convincing everyone around them means Olive and Adam must make their fake relationship look believable. When Adam notices their friends watching from nearby, he tells Olive: “I should kiss you. Your friends, they’re watching from the balcony.”

Directed by Claire Scanlon, The Love Hypothesis also stars Rachel Marsh as Ahn and Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy, with Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan joining the cast. Sarah Rothschild adapted Hazelwood’s novel for the screen, while Elizabeth Cantillon produces.
Speaking at Obsessed Fest, Bateman said the novel remained “always front and centre” during production as the cast and filmmakers worked to capture the spirit of Hazelwood’s story.
Reinhart described the film as something she hopes viewers will return to with their friends, adding: “We all want to see a lot more love than hate and this is that. I think it’s beautiful and hopefully feels timeless.”
For CultureCues, the first teaser already captures the awkwardness and tension that made Olive and Adam’s fake-dating arrangement such a hit with readers. The science-inspired narration is a fun touch, while Reinhart and Bateman appear to understand exactly why fans have been waiting to see these characters brought to life. Our latest hypothesis? This could become one of Prime Video’s biggest romance releases of the year.
The Love Hypothesis will stream globally on Prime Video from 23 September 2026.
