The official Netflix description reads: “In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a crew of unlikely heroes must stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.” It is a very strong hook, and one that immediately gives the series a fun balance of supernatural danger, emotional stakes and unlikely heroes.

At CultureCues, what makes The Boroughs so intriguing is the way it puts older characters at the centre of a genre story without making their age the punchline. There is a sci-fi mystery here, but the hook goes beyond the setting. This looks like a story about people who have lived full lives, still have plenty left to fight for, and now find themselves facing an impossible threat in the middle of retirement paradise.

With the Duffer Brothers as executive producers, there is also obvious appeal for viewers looking for that next strange community mystery after Stranger Things. Add in Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare and Bill Pullman taking on a time-stealing supernatural threat inside a retirement community, and this has very quickly earned a spot on our Netflix watchlist.

The Boroughs premieres on Netflix on 21 May 2026.
