Ella Purnell is back as Rhiannon Lewis in the first teaser trailer for Sweetpea Season 2, with Sky confirming that the darkly comic thriller will return to the UK this November.
Picking up after the deadly events of the first season, Rhiannon has seemingly moved up in the world. She has a new promotion at the Carnsham Gazette, a new romantic interest and, judging by the teaser, absolutely no intention of leaving her murderous tendencies behind. “Do you know what? I’m gonna live my truth!” she declares, although Rhiannon’s version of living authentically remains rather more lethal than most.
Season 2 will see her dealing with a complicated situation after a copycat killer emerges and threatens to expose everything she has done. Her kill list is continuing to grow, and the arrival of someone apparently following in her footsteps forces Rhiannon to confront a question left hanging over her since the first season: was AJ right about her all along, and is she actually a monster?
Fallout and Yellowjackets star Purnell returns in the lead role, with several new faces joining her this season. Rish Shah, known for Overcompensating and Joy, will play Rhiannon’s new romantic interest Gabriel. Friday Night Dinner star Tamsin Greig joins as AJ’s mother Liv, with Taj Atwal playing Rhiannon’s formidable new boss Freya at the Carnsham Gazette and Heartstopper’s Jenny Walser appearing as her new friend Daisy.
Jon Pointing (Big Boys), Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso, Downton Abbey), Leah Harvey (Foundation), Ingrid Oliver (The Thursday Murder Club, Doctor Who), Nitin Ganatra (Mr Bigstuff, Sexy Beast) and Alexandra Dowling (Game of Thrones, Emily) will all return from the first season. Watch the teaser below.
Adapted from C.J. Skuse’s novel of the same name, Sweetpea is produced by See-Saw Films and fanboy in association with Sky Studios. Selina Lim takes over as lead writer for Season 2, joined by episodic writers Emme Hoy, Anna Jordan and Laura Jayne Tunbridge. Ella Jones returns as lead director, with Coky Giedroyc directing episodes two, three and four. Purnell also serves as an executive producer on the series.
Sweetpea became one of Purnell’s most distinctive recent roles when it debuted in 2024, giving her a character who could switch between overlooked office worker, furious internal monologue and newly confident killer with unnerving ease. Season 2 appears ready to push that transformation even further, particularly now that Rhiannon has discovered someone else may be playing her own game.
For CultureCues, introducing a copycat killer is an excellent way to complicate Rhiannon’s already chaotic double life. The first season was at its best when Purnell balanced the character’s dark comedy with the uncomfortable thrill of watching someone who had spent years feeling invisible suddenly realise how powerful she could be. Giving Rhiannon somebody who might expose, imitate or even understand her promises to make Season 2 a very interesting next chapter.
Sweetpea Season 2 premieres on Sky this November, before arriving on STARZ in early 2027.
