The Stranger Things universe is expanding once again! Netflix has officially announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a brand-new live-action prequel series arriving in 2028. Revealed on Friday 6 November as part of this year’s Stranger Things Day celebrations, the upcoming series will take viewers back to the 1950s, long before Eleven and the Hawkins gang first encountered the terrifying mysteries of the Upside Down.
The announcement was accompanied by a short teaser, which introduces the intriguing tagline, “Before Hawkins, there was Marion”, giving fans their first hint at where this new adventure will begin. Set decades before the original Netflix series, Other Worlds will feature an entirely new setting, characters and supernatural mysteries, with Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer returning as executive producers.
The story will also take place before the events of the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores Henry Creel’s early years in Hawkins in 1959. Although Netflix is keeping the full storyline under wraps for now, the Duffer Brothers have promised that the spin-off will explore a different side of the Stranger Things universe.
Speaking about the announcement, Matt and Ross Duffer said: “We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating.” They also teased that the series would introduce new heroes and villains, before joking that they weren’t allowed to reveal anything further just yet.
Who Is Behind Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure?
The new series comes from longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator and executive producer. Trefry previously wrote the stage prequel Stranger Things: The First Shadow and has worked on the Netflix series since its second season. Speaking about returning to the franchise, Trefry said: “There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds.”
Joining her is acclaimed British filmmaker Joe Wright, known for directing Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, who will direct the first three episodes.
When Is the Stranger Things Spin-Off Coming to Netflix?
Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2028, with an exact release date still to be announced. The live-action prequel is the latest addition to the growing Stranger Things franchise, which has already expanded beyond the original five-season series with the stage production The First Shadow and animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
The first teaser for Other Worlds also features the classic 1950s song “Sh-Boom” by The Crew Cuts, introducing the period setting while offering a brief glimpse of what’s to come.

For CultureCues, we’re huge Stranger Things fans, so we’re excited that there’s still more of this universe to explore. We loved following Eleven and the gang over the years, but we’re looking forward to seeing a new story, especially one set in the 1950s. And that little tease about Marion has already got us wondering what happened there and how it might connect to Hawkins. We’re sure the Duffer Brothers have a few surprises up their sleeves, but having to wait until 2028 might just turn our world upside down.
