Can I go inside your heart? Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have released the frightening first trailer for Other Mommy, a new horror thriller starring Jessica Chastain in a dual role. The film arrives in cinemas on 9 October 2026, and judging by the first footage, Chastain’s sinister double is not afraid to bend herself into some very uncomfortable positions.
Based on Josh Malerman’s bestselling novel Incidents Around the House, Other Mommy follows a young girl named Bela, played by Arabella Olivia Clark, who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home that looks uncannily like her own mother. It is a simple setup, but an effective one, especially because the threat is tied so closely to someone Bela should be able to trust. There is plenty of room for the story to play with fear, confusion and the question of which version of “Mommy” Bela believes.
Chastain plays both Bela’s mother and “Other Mommy”. The trailer offers a first glimpse at that eerie double performance, alongside the chilling warning: “Your mommy won’t save you.”
Jay Duplass stars as Bela’s father, known as Daddo, with Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed and Karen Allen also joining the cast. The film is directed by Rob Savage, whose previous horror credits include Host and The Boogeyman, while James Wan produces through Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
The screenplay was written by Nathan Elston, based on Malerman’s novel. Malerman is also known for writing Bird Box, which was adapted into the hit Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock. Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Savage, Malerman and Ryan Lewis serve as executive producers.
For CultureCues, Chastain already looks set to deliver an incredible dual performance, and the trailer is properly creepy. It feels like the kind of horror that will keep us guessing, with plenty of twists and turns before the truth is revealed. We will definitely be watching, although probably peeking between our fingers.
