Netflix is bringing Monopoly to life with a new competition series offering contestants the chance to win a $2 million prize. The series will place 12 players inside a life-sized Monopoly Town Square, where they will earn money, buy properties and negotiate deals as they attempt to build their own empire.
Strategy and alliances will play a major part in the game, with contestants trying to stay financially afloat while those who become bankrupt are eliminated. The competition will continue until only one player remains to take home the full prize. Naturally, there will also be opportunities to end up in jail, although Netflix has warned that a get-out-of-jail-free card is not included with the $2 million.
Casting is now open for anyone who thinks they have the dealmaking skills to survive the board and become one of the 12 players. You can apply here.
The new series is being made in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and produced by Studio Lambert, the company behind Netflix competition shows including Squid Game: The Challenge and The Circle. Gabriel Marano and Zachary Edwin will executive produce for Hasbro Entertainment. Nia Yemoh, Tim Harcourt, Jack Burgess, Stephen Lambert and Kim Murphy will executive produce for Studio Lambert.
The project joins Netflix’s growing collection of unscripted adaptations based on familiar games and stories. It will follow Wonka’s The Golden Ticket, a competition series inspired by Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Monopoly first launched in 1935 and has since become one of the most recognisable board games in the world. Its basic aim of buying property, collecting rent and forcing the other players into bankruptcy should translate pretty naturally into a reality competition.
For CultureCues, this is definitely an interesting one. Monopoly is such a classic game that turning it into a real-life competition sounds like it could be a lot of fun, and we are curious to see how it all plays out. We are expecting alliances, betrayals and plenty of questionable deals. Pass Go, collect the drama.
Netflix’s Monopoly competition series will premiere in autumn 2027.
