Apple TV has released the first trailer for Matchbox The Movie, sending John Cena and a group of childhood friends into a high-speed international mission to save the world.

Inspired by Mattel’s iconic die-cast cars, the action adventure premieres globally on Apple TV on 9 October 2026. Extraction director Sam Hargrave leads the project from a screenplay by David Coggeshal.

Cena stars as Sean Walker, the long-absent former leader of a childhood friendship group who has secretly become an undercover CIA agent. When Sean returns to his small town, his old friends are unexpectedly pulled into a dangerous international pursuit involving fast cars, armed enemies and a missing nuclear weapon.

The trailer begins with Sean reuniting with the group in a bar, but the evening quickly takes a suspicious turn when everyone begins feeling unwell. “Everybody listen, we’re all gonna wake up someplace different,” he warns moments before they find themselves held captive aboard a cargo jet.

The trailer also leans into plenty of humour, particularly as Sean’s friends slowly realise he may be a spy and struggle to work out whether he is the good guy or the bad guy. Their confusion continues aboard the cargo plane, where a threat about throwing people overboard becomes one of the teaser’s best running gags. As the tagline puts it: “Save the world. Bring your friends.”

Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Randeep Hooda star alongside Cena. The group must work together to prevent a worldwide disaster while rebuilding the friendship that once connected them.

The project marks the latest Mattel property to receive a major screen adaptation following the success of Barbie. The Matchbox brand was introduced nearly 70 years ago and has remained recognisable across generations through its miniature vehicles and imaginative play.

For CultureCues, the first trailer delivers exactly the fast cars and huge stunts we hoped to see from a Matchboxadventure, but the humour may be the biggest surprise. John Cena looks perfectly suited to Sean’s mix of action hero and old friend with plenty to hide, while the cargo-plane sequence shows Hargrave is bringing real scale to the screen. With a nuclear warhead at the centre of the chase and the group pulled into danger before they know what is happening, we are absolutely ready to buckle up.
