Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for Klara and the Sun, starring Jenna Ortega as a solar-powered Artificial Friend created to provide companionship and help combat loneliness in a near-future society. The film will arrive in cinemas on 23 October 2026.
Directed by Taika Waititi and based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed 2021 novel, the story follows Klara as she waits in a shop, hoping that someone will choose her. Looking towards the sunlight outside, she quietly asks, “Glorious sun, please let today be my day. Let me find a friend.”
That friend is Josie, played by Mia Tharia, a teenager living with a mysterious illness and a complicated relationship with her mother, played by Amy Adams. Klara is welcomed into their home on a trial basis, although Adams’ character makes it clear that she will not hesitate to return her. As Klara learns about the people around her, she becomes determined to help Josie and repair the fractures within her family. Natasha Lyonne appears as the manager of the Artificial Friend shop, while Steve Buscemi also stars.
For CultureCues, Klara and the Sun already has us intrigued. Jenna Ortega feels like an interesting choice for Klara, and the trailer gives us just enough of the story without revealing too much. We will definitely be watching when it arrives in cinemas this October.
