House of the Dragon Season 3 has officially come to an end, and after another huge finale, attention has already turned to one question: how long are we going to have to wait for Season 4?
The good news is that House of the Dragon has already been renewed, so there is no uncertainty over whether the series will return. The slightly less exciting news is that we have another lengthy wait ahead of us, with HBO confirming that Season 4 will arrive in 2028. An exact release date has not been announced yet.
When Will House of the Dragon Season 4 Be Released?
House of the Dragon Season 4 is officially set to premiere in 2028, meaning fans should prepare for another two-year gap between seasons. HBO confirmed the fourth season back in November 2025 as part of its plans to continue bringing viewers new stories from the Game of Thrones universe through 2028.
There is no exact date yet, but a summer 2028 release currently seems the most likely based on the show’s previous schedule. Season 1 arrived in August 2022, followed by Season 2 in June 2024 and Season 3 in June 2026, so HBO has consistently positioned House of the Dragon as one of its major summer releases. That remains a prediction for now, though, and HBO has only officially confirmed the 2028 window.
Why Is House of the Dragon Season 4 Taking So Long?
As frustrating as another two-year wait may be, Season 4 still has a considerable amount of work ahead of it. Filming has not started yet, with production currently expected to begin in spring 2027. Showrunner Ryan Condal has explained that the scale of House of the Dragon, along with the need to film around the British summer and longer daylight hours, plays a part in its lengthy production schedule.
Work on the final season is already well underway behind the scenes. Condal confirmed earlier this summer that the writing team had been working through the Season 4 scripts and sending material to HBO, meaning the story is being mapped out well before cameras begin rolling. Then comes the huge amount of post-production required for a series packed with dragons, battles and large-scale sequences, so a 2028 return is not particularly surprising even if we would happily take it much sooner.
Is House of the Dragon Season 4 the Final Season?
Yes. Season 4 will be the final season of House of the Dragon.
Condal first revealed after Season 2 that the plan was to tell the story across four seasons, and he has continued to confirm that Season 4 will bring the series to its conclusion. Following the Season 3 finale, he said the team now has eight episodes left to finish the story of the Dance of the Dragons and bring the remaining character arcs together. That means there will not be a House of the Dragon Season 5, with the upcoming episodes designed as the final chapter rather than another stage in an ongoing series.
How Many Episodes Will House of the Dragon Season 4 Have?
Season 4 is set to consist of eight episodes, matching Seasons 2 and 3.
Condal confirmed the eight-episode count in a post-finale interview, describing them as the final “eight chapters” of the story. He has also called Season 4 the biggest yet, which makes sense given how much of the Dance of the Dragons is still to come and how many storylines now need to reach their conclusion.
What Can We Expect From House of the Dragon Season 4?

After the Battle of Tumbleton, Season 3 leaves the war in a very different place heading into the final episodes. Aegon and Sunfyre are back in play, Rhaenyra’s path has taken an increasingly darker turn and the balance between the Blacks and Greens has shifted again just as the series enters its endgame.
Condal has confirmed that Season 4 will bring the conflict towards its conclusion, but exactly where the series chooses to end within George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood remains one of the biggest questions. Speaking after the finale, he explained that the challenge is finding the right point to close this chapter of Targaryen history without making it feel as though the wider story simply stops there.
For now, though, the most important answer is that House of the Dragon will return in 2028, Season 4 will contain eight episodes and it will be the final season. After everything Season 3 left us with, two years is going to feel like a very long time.
