Netflix has announced Heartstopper: Ending on a Hi, a new behind-the-scenes special celebrating the making of Heartstopper and the lasting impact it has had on fans around the world. The 35-minute special will be released on Netflix on 24 July, one week after Heartstopper Forever premieres on 17 July. The feature-length film will bring Nick and Charlie’s story to a close, while Ending on a Hi will act as a companion piece for fans saying goodbye to the series.

According to Netflix, the special will reunite the people who made Heartstopper with the fans who fell in love with it. Alice Oseman, creator of the graphic novels, series and film, says: “The thing that keeps us going is knowing that Heartstopper has made a positive impact in the world.”

The special will include never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, cast and crew interviews, fan stories and commentary on the show’s wider cultural impact. The special will also include perspectives from cultural voices, including Gay Times chair Tag Warner, writer and journalist Jamie Windust, TV journalist Cydney Yeates and Digital Spy TV journalist Janet Leigh. Since its debut in 2022, Heartstopper has become one of Netflix’s most beloved young queer dramas, with Season 1 earning 53 million viewing hours in its first three weeks and helping turn Kit Connor and Joe Locke into breakout stars.

Oseman is featured in the special alongside executive producer Patrick Walters and cast members Kit Connor, Joe Locke, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Jenny Walser, Tobie Donovan, Yasmin Finney and William Gao. Locke reflects on the show’s connection with viewers, saying: “That will always be the most special thing.”

Netflix has also shared a Heartstopper Summer poster laying out the wider farewell rollout for fans. The calendar includes the daily Basement Series from 9 to 15 July, the Heartstopper Forever world premiere on 14 July, vinyl box set pre-orders opening on 15 July and Basement Series bloopers on 16 July. Then, on 17 July, fans will get Heartstopper Forever, the official podcast and the digital album, before Heartstopper: Ending on a Hi follows on 24 July.

Directed by Luke Hyams, Heartstopper: Ending on a Hi is produced by Pangaea, with Sunita Mirchandani Hyams serving as executive producer.

For CultureCues, this feels like a lovely way to close the Heartstopper chapter. The series has always meant so much more than a Netflix teen drama to its fans, and giving space to the cast, creatives and viewers who made it feel so special feels right. We are not emotionally prepared for Heartstopper Forever, and now Netflix is giving us a behind-the-scenes special too? Hi, tears. We knew you were coming.

Heartstopper Forever premieres on Netflix on 17 July, followed by Heartstopper: Ending on a Hi on 24 July, as part of Netflix’s wider Heartstopper Summer rollout.
