HBO’s Harry Potter series will recast Ginny Weasley ahead of its second season, after Gracie Cochrane stepped away from the role following season one. Cochrane was cast as the youngest member of the Weasley family in the first season of the upcoming television adaptation, which is based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. HBO has confirmed that she will not return for season two, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. A replacement has not yet been announced.
In a statement, Cochrane and her family said she had made the “challenging decision” to leave the role due to unforeseen circumstances. HBO also supported the decision, thanking Cochrane for her work on the first season and wishing her and her family the best.
Ginny has only a small presence in the first book, where she appears at King’s Cross with Molly Weasley to wave off her older siblings as they leave for Hogwarts. That changes in The Chamber of Secrets, where she is drawn into one of the school’s darkest mysteries after being manipulated through Tom Riddle’s diary, unknowingly opening the Chamber and unleashing the danger hidden beneath Hogwarts. It makes the timing of the recast especially notable, as season two is expected to place Ginny much closer to the centre of the story. The first season of HBO’s Harry Potter series has now wrapped and is expected to premiere this Christmas, while season two is currently in pre-production at Leavesden Studios outside London.
For fans, Ginny’s recasting will likely be one of the first major changes to watch as the new adaptation moves beyond its opening season. Bonnie Wright previously played the character across all eight Harry Potter films, and with Ginny’s role growing from book two onwards, whoever steps into the part next will be joining the series at a key moment. Time, then, for another trip to King’s Cross.
