Grand Theft Auto VI has somehow turned a 27-minute gameplay showcase into one of Netflix’s biggest releases this week. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look pulled in 31.1 million views in four days, topping Netflix’s English-language film chart and reaching No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries tracked globally.

The numbers are especially striking because the presentation was only exclusive to Netflix for six hours. Rockstar Games premiered the extended look on the streaming service on 27 August before releasing it on YouTube later that day, turning the showcase itself into a major streaming event.

Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, the 27-minute special gives players their longest look at GTA 6 so far, following Jason and Lucia through Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. The footage shows more of the pair’s relationship, the criminal world surrounding them and the trouble that follows when one of their plans goes wrong.

It also comfortably beat other major Netflix releases. The Whisper Man, starring Adam Scott, placed second on the English-language film chart with 23.2 million views, leaving GTA 6 almost eight million views ahead.

Netflix’s Brandon Riegg described Grand Theft Auto reveals as cultural events in their own right, with the platform seeing the partnership with Rockstar as an example of major storytelling from outside traditional film and television finding an audience on Netflix.

The huge response continues a run of record-breaking interest around Rockstar’s next game. Previous GTA 6 trailers have already generated enormous numbers online, but 31.1 million Netflix views for a gameplay presentation shows just how far anticipation for the game now stretches beyond dedicated gaming audiences.
