Netflix has officially confirmed the full release plan for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. IMAX previews will begin on 10 February 2027, followed by a wide global cinema release on 12 February. The film will then arrive on Netflix on 2 April 2027.

Parts of the release strategy were previously reported, but Netflix has now set out the complete worldwide rollout. The film will receive approximately seven weeks exclusively in cinemas before becoming available to stream, marking a major change from the limited theatrical runs usually given to Netflix releases.

Netflix will handle the film’s theatrical distribution in North America, while Sony Pictures Entertainment will release The Magician’s Nephew in cinemas across the rest of the world. Written and directed by Gerwig, the film will be the first screen adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s 1955 novel The Magician’s Nephew. The story explores the creation of Narnia and takes place before the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell lead the cast alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma.

“Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary,” Gerwig said, adding that she cannot wait for audiences to experience it in cinemas and later on Netflix. The filmmaker has also spoken about reading The Magician’s Nephew as a child and being captivated by the idea of Aslan singing the world of Narnia into existence. Gerwig said the book taught her to believe in magic, hidden worlds and the possibility that ordinary people could be swept into an extraordinary adventure.

The film will feature an original score from Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who previously collaborated with Gerwig on Barbie. George Drakoulias will serve as music supervisor.

For CultureCues, giving Narnia a genuine worldwide cinema release feels right for a story built around the creation of an entire magical world. Gerwig has been open about how much the book meant to her growing up, and the scale of this rollout suggests Netflix is treating her adaptation as a major cinematic event. We are more than ready to step through another doorway into Narnia.
