Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have revealed the official title for their upcoming animated Ghostbusters series. The new series will be called Ghostbusters: Night Shift and is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2027. The title and logo were announced as part of this year’s Ghostbusters Day celebrations, marking the anniversary of the original 1984 film.
The animated series is being developed by Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation in partnership with Ghost Corps, Inc. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, who have been involved in the franchise’s recent big-screen future, are attached as executive producers. Showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan joined Reitman and Kenan for the announcement, giving fans their first look at the next animated chapter in the Ghostbusters universe.
The new show continues the franchise’s long history in animation. Following the success of Ghostbusters in 1984 and Ghostbusters II in 1989, The Real Ghostbusters ran from 1986 to 1991, before Extreme Ghostbusters followed in 1997. Since then, the franchise has continued to expand across films, animation, merchandise and fan events, with Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire introducing the world to a new generation of ghost-hunters while keeping the original mythology alive.
As part of the Ghostbusters Day celebrations, Reitman and Kenan also recognised fans for surpassing the Ghostbusters Give Back initiative’s $500,000 donation goal. Sony also presented a $150,000 matching donation to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, bringing the total raised to $666,000.
For CultureCues, Ghostbusters: Night Shift feels like a very natural next step for the franchise. Ghostbusters has always had the kind of premise that works brilliantly in animation, with strange spirits, big gadgets and a world where every haunted building could become its own little adventure. The title also has a nice ring to it. Night Shift instantly gives the series a late-night, spooky workplace feel, which is basically exactly where Ghostbusters should live. Who you gonna call? Netflix, apparently.
Ghostbusters: Night Shift is set to premiere on Netflix in 2027.
