Disney+ has released the official trailer for Alice and Steve, a new six-part “wrong-com” starring Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement. The Hulu Original series from the UK will stream exclusively on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland from Monday 8 June, with all six episodes available at launch.

Created and written by Sophie Goodhart, whose credits include Sex Education, the series stars Walker as Alice and Clement as Steve, two best friends whose relationship implodes when Steve starts dating Alice’s 26-year-old daughter, Izzy, played by Yali Topol Margalith. Joel Fry also stars.

The set-up is pure chaos. Alice is devastated at the thought of losing her best friend and her daughter in one blow, so she sets out to end the relationship. Unfortunately for her, Steve is ready for the attack, turning what was once a close friendship into an all-out feud.

Billed as an anti-romantic comedy, Alice and Steve explores friendship, family, love and revenge through a messy relationship triangle that feels designed to make every family dinner a disaster. The trailer leans into the awkwardness, with Alice’s fury at Steve giving the series its sharpest comic edge.

For CultureCues, this looks like a proper “absolutely not, but I need to watch every episode” kind of premise. Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement already feel like a brilliantly odd pairing, and the idea of a best friendship collapsing into emotional warfare gives Alice and Steve an uncomfortable, very clickable hook.

The series premiered at CANNESERIES in April, where it received a standing ovation and picked up three awards, including Best Series. It will also have its US premiere at Tribeca Festival.

Alice and Steve streams on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland from 8 June.
