Disney+ has revealed a first look clip from Alice and Steve, the new British “wrong-com” starring Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement. The six-part Hulu Original series from the UK will stream exclusively on Disney+ from Monday 8 June, with Joel Fry and Yali Topol Margalith also among the cast.

The series follows Alice, played by Walker, whose life is thrown into deeply uncomfortable territory when her best friend Steve, played by Clement, starts dating her 26-year-old daughter Izzy. In the newly released clip, Steve arrives for dinner as Izzy’s boyfriend for the first time, while Alice tries, and very much fails, to hide how horrified she is by the whole situation. The scene sets up the central tension of the series, with Alice making her first attempt to bring the relationship to an end. Unfortunately for her, Steve is ready for the fight, and what begins as a close friendship soon turns into a full-blown feud.

Created and written by Sophie Goodhart, whose credits include Rivals and Sex Education, Alice and Steve is directed by BAFTA-winner Tom Kingsley, known for Stath Lets Flats. The series comes from Clerkenwell Films, the production company behind Baby Reindeer, with Petra Fried, Andy Baker and Wim de Greef executive producing alongside a strong creative team. Fran du Pille serves as producer.

For CultureCues, Alice and Steve has the kind of painfully awkward British comedy set-up that instantly makes us curious. The first look clip points to a series that understands how funny forced politeness can be when everyone in the room is trying very hard not to say what they are thinking. With Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement at the centre of it, this already has all the makings of a show we will be watching through our fingers, laughing at the discomfort, and waiting to see how much worse things can get.
