Dark Winds Season 4 has only just arrived on Netflix, but fans already have another mystery to look forward to. AMC renewed the acclaimed crime drama for a fifth season before Season 4 had even premiered, and production on the next eight episodes has now wrapped.
Based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, the series follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) as they investigate increasingly dangerous crimes across the Navajo Nation during the 1970s. Season 4 took the characters beyond their usual surroundings and into Los Angeles, but the next chapter appears set to bring the story closer to home again.
Here is everything confirmed about Dark Winds Season 5, including its expected release window, new characters and when the episodes could eventually arrive on Netflix.
Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for the Dark Winds Season 4 ending.
Has Dark Winds Been Renewed for Season 5?
Yes, AMC officially renewed Dark Winds for a fifth season on 5 February 2026, more than a week before Season 4 premiered. The new chapter will contain eight hour-long episodes and is scheduled to debut on AMC and AMC+ sometime in 2027.
“Over four seasons, Dark Winds has masterfully blended compelling character-driven stories, Navajo culture, spirituality and breathtaking cinematography,” Dan McDermott, Chief Content Officer of AMC Networks, said when the renewal was announced. He added: “Our extraordinary producing and creative team, cast and crew have crafted a gripping crime drama that continues to be embraced by fans and widely celebrated by critics. We can’t wait to share more of this incredible story with audiences across the globe.”
The renewal was a major vote of confidence from AMC, particularly as it arrived before viewers had seen how the fourth season would change the lives of Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito.
Has Dark Winds Season 5 Finished Filming?
Production began in and around Santa Fe and Tesuque Pueblo in New Mexico during spring 2026, with AMC later confirming that filming had wrapped during the summer. The production employed hundreds of local crew members, background performers and principal actors.

With all eight episodes now filmed, the series has entered post-production ahead of its planned 2027 release. AMC has not announced an exact premiere date, but the completed filming schedule should give the team plenty of time to prepare the new season for the first half of the year.
McClarnon will return as both Leaphorn and an executive producer. He will also direct the second episode of Season 5, continuing his work behind the camera after making his television directorial debut during Season 4.
What Will Dark Winds Season 5 Be About?
AMC has not released a full synopsis, but the Season 4 finale left the series with a major murder to solve. Acting Chief Gordo Sena was killed, leaving Leaphorn facing the loss of a longtime friend and another investigation that could pull him back into the work he had considered leaving behind.
John Hoogenakker joins the regular cast as Sheriff Mark Bishop, Gordo’s younger and more buttoned-up successor. Bishop allows Leaphorn to become involved in the murder investigation, but the pair are expected to clash over jurisdiction and who should be leading the case. That conflict should give Season 5 a strong central mystery, particularly with Leaphorn personally connected to the victim. The character has never been particularly willing to step aside when he believes justice is at stake, and a new sheriff attempting to establish his authority may find that working with him is not straightforward.

After Season 4 took Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito to the dangerous streets of 1970s Los Angeles, the new story appears ready to return the focus to the Navajo Nation and the people whose lives have driven the series from the beginning.
Are Bernadette and Chee Getting Married?
Season 5 will also continue the relationship between Bernadette Manuelito and Jim Chee, with the couple preparing for a traditional Navajo wedding after several seasons of uncertainty and separation. Geraldine Keams is returning as Alice Benally, Emma Leaphorn’s mother, who first appeared during the opening season. Alice will help Emma prepare for the ceremony, creating an opportunity for the series to explore the family and cultural traditions surrounding the wedding.
The celebration may provide some happiness among the murder investigation and its likely consequences, although weddings in crime dramas rarely pass without complications. Bernadette’s personal life will become even more difficult when someone from her past unexpectedly returns.
Who Is Bernadette’s Father?
Gregory Cruz joins Season 5 in a recurring role as Ed Manuelito, Bernadette’s biological father. A Second World War veteran living with post-traumatic stress, Ed abandoned Bernadette at a boarding school following the death of her mother. Fifteen years later, he returns with the support of his church and a newfound commitment to sobriety, hoping to make amends with the daughter he left behind.
His arrival gives Jessica Matten another personal storyline to explore. Bernadette has spent much of the series fighting for her independence and deciding where she belongs, so being confronted by the father who abandoned her could reopen painful parts of her history just as she is preparing to begin a new life with Chee.
Who Is Returning for Dark Winds Season 5?
Zahn McClarnon returns as Lt. Joe Leaphorn, with Kiowa Gordon expected back as Jim Chee, Jessica Matten as Bernadette Manuelito and Deanna Allison as Emma Leaphorn. Isabel Deroy-Olson is also expected to return as Billie Tsosie, alongside Elva Guerra as Sally Growing Thunder and Paola Núñez as Luisa Alvarado. New additions include John Hoogenakker as Sheriff Mark Bishop and Gregory Cruz as Ed Manuelito, with Geraldine Keams returning as Alice Benally.
When Will Dark Winds Season 5 Be Released?
AMC has confirmed Dark Winds Season 5 will premiere in 2027, although no exact date has been announced.
Season 4 premiered on AMC and AMC+ in February 2026, so another February or early spring launch would fit the show’s recent release pattern. With filming already complete, an early 2027 return appears possible, but this remains a prediction until AMC confirms its schedule. New episodes will air first on AMC and stream through AMC+ in the US. UK availability has not yet been announced.
When Could Dark Winds Season 5 Arrive on Netflix?
Netflix has not officially confirmed that it will receive Season 5. However, the streaming service has continued adding newer seasons through its licensing agreement with AMC, and the show has found a much larger international audience since joining the platform. Seasons 1 and 2 arrived on Netflix in August 2024, followed by Season 3 in October 2025. Season 4 was added in July 2026, around five months after its AMC premiere. Netflix has confirmed that the fourth season is now available to stream.

If Season 5 premieres on AMC during the first few months of 2027 and follows a similar gap, it could reach Netflix during summer or early autumn 2027. That date is currently only an estimate, and a Netflix release will depend on AMC continuing its licensing arrangement for future seasons. CultureCues will update this guide once AMC confirms the premiere date or Netflix announces when the fifth season will join its library.
CultureCues Final Thoughts
For CultureCues, Dark Winds remains one of the most compelling crime dramas currently on television, and its arrival on Netflix has allowed even more viewers to discover it. Season 4 took the characters into unfamiliar territory, but bringing the story back towards the Navajo Nation feels right for the next chapter.
Gordo’s murder gives Leaphorn an intensely personal reason to become involved again, and his likely clashes with Sheriff Bishop should make the investigation even more difficult. We are equally interested in Bernadette and Chee’s wedding, particularly with the unexpected return of the father who abandoned her. There may still be a wait before Season 5 reaches Netflix, but with filming already complete and eight more episodes confirmed for 2027, the next mystery is firmly on its way.
