Apple TV has released the official trailer for Dark Matter Season 2, confirming that the sci-fi thriller will return on 28 August 2026. The new footage debuted during the series’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, with Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly returning as Jason and Daniela Dessen. The 10-episode season will begin with a single episode, followed by a new instalment every Friday through October.

Season 1 followed physicist and family man Jason after he was abducted and taken into an alternate version of his life. His search for a way home forced him through countless realities shaped by the different paths his life could have taken, eventually leading his family to seek safety in another world.

Season 2 begins with the Dessens attempting to build a quiet life in what author and showrunner Blake Crouch calls World 26. That peace is quickly shattered when an unimaginable threat forces them to run again, with someone now hunting Jason through the multiverse.

The trailer opens with an intimidating voice identifying “Jason Dessen, quantum physicist,” before revealing that his obsession with the Box is continuing to grow. Daniela admits that she is frightened by what she sees in her husband, while their son Charlie desperately searches for some stability as the family faces another crisis.

Speaking during the panel, Edgerton reflected on the unusual emotional challenges created by the series’ alternate realities. “There are so many things that get served up in this show that you go, ‘This will never happen in my life. When am I? Unless I’m on LSD,’” he joked.

Connelly explained that Daniela will repeat unresolved patterns from her past in unexpected ways. “We have people exploring things that we can all relate to as people in really extraordinary ways,” she said.

Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan join forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home. Alice Braga teased that Amanda has reached a utopian world without climate change, where empathy shapes society, although the trailer suggests even the safest reality may come with complications. Blair is also determined to stop Leighton as he pursues his vision of creating a perfect world.

Edgerton, Connelly and Braga return alongside Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley and Amanda Brugel. Crouch created the television adaptation from his bestselling novel and continues as showrunner and executive producer.

A companion series, Dark Matter: The Official Podcast, will also launch alongside the new season. Hosted by Crouch and executive producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, it will explore each episode, the science behind the multiverse and how the story has expanded beyond the original novel.

For CultureCues, Season 2 was already high on our list, and this trailer has made the wait even harder. The Box remains completely unpredictable, but the biggest warning sign may be Jason himself and just how far he is prepared to go to protect his family. Daniela admitting that she is frightened by what she sees in him immediately raises the tension, while Amanda’s utopian reality opens another door in a multiverse where nothing stays perfect for long. After that first-season finale, we are more than ready to step back inside.

Dark Matter Season 2 premieres on Apple TV on Friday, 28 August 2026.
