Cyberpunk 2077 is officially heading to the big screen, with Paramount Pictures developing a live-action film set within the hit video game’s dystopian universe. Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce the project alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish game developer and rights holder behind Cyberpunk 2077. Details are still very limited at this stage, with no story, cast or release date announced yet, although CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has acknowledged the partnership.
The original game is set in Night City, a sprawling metropolis where corporations hold enormous power and cybernetic enhancements, artificial intelligence and virtual reality are part of everyday life. Players take control of V, a mercenary who becomes connected to Johnny Silverhand through a cybernetic biochip, setting off a story involving the powerful Arasaka Corporation and a fight for control over V’s own mind and life.
It is not yet known whether the film will adapt that storyline directly or tell a new story somewhere else within the Cyberpunk universe. Keanu Reeves plays Johnny Silverhand in the game, but there has been no confirmation that he will be involved in the Paramount film.

The game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide since its release in 2020, with its Phantom Liberty expansion adding another 15 million sales. Paramount already has other video game adaptations in development, including Street Fighter and Call of Duty, with Cyberpunk 2077 now joining that slate.
For CultureCues, Cyberpunk 2077 feels like a very obvious world to take to the big screen, especially with Night City already giving filmmakers so much to work with visually. Fans of the game will no doubt be very happy to see it getting the live-action treatment, and one of the biggest questions now is whether Paramount follows V and Johnny Silverhand’s story or tells something completely new in that universe. There is still a long way to go before we know what this actually looks like, but we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on casting and story details as they come in.
The Cyberpunk 2077 live-action movie is in development at Paramount.
