The Great Celebrity Pottery Throwdown is coming to Channel 4 this September, with the new celebrity spin-off beginning on Sunday, 13 September at 7:45pm. Hosted by Liza Tarbuck, the five-part series will bring six famous faces into the pottery studio to learn the craft from judges Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller. Lucy Beaumont, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Richard Herring, Paul Merson, Layton Williams and Denise Van Outen make up the first celebrity cast, with all six beginning the competition with little or no pottery experience. Unlike the regular Great Pottery Throw Down format, nobody will be eliminated each week, giving the celebrities the full series to develop their skills before the competition reaches its final.

When Does The Great Celebrity Pottery Throwdown Start?

The Great Celebrity Pottery Throwdown begins on Sunday, 13 September at 7:45pm on Channel 4.

There are five episodes in the new series. Channel 4 has confirmed the premiere date, although the complete transmission schedule has not been released. If episodes continue weekly on Sunday nights without a break, the series would run through September and October, with the final expected on Sunday, 11 October. We will update the schedule if Channel 4 confirms any changes.

Who Is in The Great Celebrity Pottery Throwdown Cast?

Six celebrities are taking on the wheel for the first series. Comedian, writer and actor Lucy Beaumont joins comedian, writer, actor and author Fatiha El-Ghorri, comedian and podcaster Richard Herring, former footballer and pundit Paul Merson, actor and West End star Layton Williams, and actress, singer, dancer and presenter Denise Van Outen.

Each arrives with limited pottery experience, giving viewers the chance to follow their progress across all five episodes rather than watching contestants leave the studio each week.

Liza Tarbuck will host the series alongside judges Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller. Tarbuck said she “absolutely loved” being part of the programme and praised the encouragement Keith and Rich gave the celebrity potters as they learned.

How Does The Great Celebrity Pottery Throwdown Work?

The biggest change from the main series is the lack of weekly eliminations. All six celebrities will remain in the pottery throughout the series, competing for points across each challenge while building their skills.

Those points will determine who earns a place in the grand final, where one celebrity will eventually be crowned champion of The Great Celebrity Pottery Throwdown. That should give the series a slightly different feel from the regular competition, with viewers able to follow each celebrity’s progress from their first attempts with clay through to the final stages.

For CultureCues, this feels like a very fun addition to the autumn TV schedule. The celebrity line-up is a good mix, and watching complete beginners try to get to grips with the wheel should give us plenty of funny moments alongside the genuinely impressive creations the show always manages to produce. We are especially interested to see who turns out to be unexpectedly brilliant at pottery, because there is always someone. Five episodes, six celebrities and no weekly eliminations means we get to watch all of them improve too, which sounds like a very cosy Sunday-night watch.
