Prime Video has cancelled adult animated comedy Kevin after just one season. The news was confirmed by co-creator and star Aubrey Plaza, who shared a message with fans on social media expressing her disappointment at the decision and thanking those who supported the show. “Amazon Prime is not picking up Kevin for another season,” Plaza wrote. “Very disappointing since we were just getting going.”

Released in April, Kevin followed a spoiled house cat who finds himself navigating life in New York City after becoming separated from his owners. The animated comedy was co-created by Plaza and comedian Joe Wengert, drawing inspiration from their former relationship and the cat they once shared.

The series featured an impressive voice cast led by Jason Schwartzman as Kevin, alongside Plaza as Dana. The ensemble also included Amy Sedaris, Aparna Nancherla, Gil Ozeri, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg and Ben Rodgers. Despite that strong line-up and positive reactions from some viewers, the series will not return for a second season on Prime Video.

Plaza compared the show’s situation to the early days of Parks and Recreation, recalling how that series was given time to find its audience. “I remember on the early days of Parks & Rec when we all thought we would be cancelled because our ratings weren’t great,” she wrote. “But we had some special humans over at NBC that believed in the show and let us grow and let audiences fall in love with our characters.”

She added that she had hoped Kevin would receive a similar opportunity. “I was hoping for this for Kevin but sadly we are living in a different time in our industry. I hope the machines won’t ruin everything. Maybe Kevin will find a new owner someday. Love you all very much. Meow.”

While Kevin has officially been cancelled by Prime Video, Plaza’s comments suggest she has not entirely given up hope for the series. Her remark that “maybe Kevin will find a new owner someday” has already prompted speculation that the creators could attempt to shop the show elsewhere. For now, however, the first season remains the only chapter in Kevin’s story.

For CultureCues, cancellations after a single season are becoming an increasingly familiar part of the streaming landscape. Whether Kevin ultimately finds a new home remains to be seen, but Plaza’s affection for the project is clear, and fans will undoubtedly be hoping the cat gets another life somewhere else.

Season 1 of Kevin is available to stream now on Prime Video.
