The Boroughs arrives on Netflix on 21 May 2026, bringing a new sci-fi mystery to a seemingly perfect retirement community. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the series stars Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard and Geena Davis, with the Duffer Brothers serving as executive producers. The official Netflix description reads: “In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a crew of unlikely heroes must stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.” It is a very strong hook, and one that immediately gives the series a fun balance of supernatural danger, emotional stakes and unlikely heroes.
Alfred Molina as Sam Cooper

Alfred Molina stars as Sam Cooper, the newest resident of The Boroughs, a retired engineer grieving the death of his wife Lily, played by Jane Kaczmarek. After a monstrous encounter, Sam begins to realise that the community he never wanted to join is not quite the peaceful paradise it appears to be. Molina is known for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Three Pines and Frida.
Geena Davis as Renee

Geena Davis plays Renee, a cynical former music manager with a rock ’n’ roll past and no interest in being underestimated. As danger begins to surface inside The Boroughs, Renee finds a new fight alongside her neighbours. Davis is known for Blink Twice, Thelma & Louise and A League of Their Own.
Alfre Woodard as Judy Daniels

Alfre Woodard plays Judy Daniels, a former journalist with an eye for detail and a habit of noticing what others miss. As The Boroughs begins to show cracks beneath its perfect surface, Judy’s investigative instincts pull her closer to the truth. Woodard is known for See, The Last Frontier and Love & Basketball.
Denis O’Hare as Wally Baker

Denis O’Hare plays Wally Baker, a retired doctor who is running out of options. Wally uses humour as both a shield and a weapon, defusing tension while proving surprisingly resourceful when things turn dangerous. O’Hare is known for his roles in American Horror Story, Dallas Buyers Club, The Good Fight and True Blood.
Clarke Peters as Art Daniels

Clarke Peters plays Art Daniels, a soulful spiritual seeker whose open mind leads him towards a strange and deeply personal transformation. As the mystery surrounding The Boroughs grows, Art’s search for meaning may become one of the group’s most unexpected strengths. Peters is knows for his roles in Foundation, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Wire.
Bill Pullman as Jack Willard

Bill Pullman plays Jack Willard, the life-of-the-party neighbour who welcomes everyone with a smile and a drink. As the residents of The Boroughs are pulled into something strange, Jack helps bring the cul-de-sac together as a found family. Pullman is known for The Sinner, The Equalizer and Independence Day.
The wider cast includes Jena Malone as Claire, Sam’s concerned daughter, Rafael Casal as her husband Neil, Carlos Miranda as security guard Paz, Eric Edelstein as head of security Hank, Seth Numrich as The Boroughs CEO Blaine Shaw, and Alice Kremelberg as Anneliese Shaw, whose polished perfection seems to say a lot about the world the residents are living in. She wants to ensure their idyllic world remains undisturbed.

At CultureCues, what makes The Boroughs so intriguing is the way it puts older characters at the centre of a genre story without making their age the punchline. There is a sci-fi mystery here, but the hook goes beyond the setting. This looks like a story about people who have lived full lives, still have plenty left to fight for, and now find themselves facing an impossible threat in the middle of retirement paradise.
With the Duffer Brothers as executive producers, there is also obvious appeal for viewers looking for that next strange community mystery after Stranger Things. Add in Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare and Bill Pullman taking on a time-stealing supernatural threat inside a retirement community, and this has very quickly earned a spot on our Netflix watchlist.
