The BBC has released the first images from The Last Detectives, a new six-part crime drama starring Mark Lewis Jones and Steffan Rhodri and filmed against the Pembrokeshire coastline. Previously announced under the title Old Town Murders, the series follows detectives DI Glyn Walsh and DS Sion Dearden as they investigate a series of murder cases in and around Tenby. Each investigation will play out across two episodes, with the drama combining the cases with the lives of the officers working them.

The first-look images introduce the wider team at South Pembrokeshire Police Station and give us an early look at the coastal setting that will run throughout the series.

What Is The Last Detectives About?

The Last Detectives centres on DI Glyn Walsh, played by Mark Lewis Jones, and DS Sion Dearden, played by Steffan Rhodri. The two detectives are brought together by circumstance and form a partnership that becomes important as they work through a succession of murder investigations.

They are joined by DC Remy Jones, played by Bethan Mary-James, DC Neil Miller, played by Jordan Davies, and forensic biologist Pamela Thomas, played by Julie Graham.

Each case will span two episodes, with the six-part series following the team through three investigations. Away from the murders themselves, the story will also look at Glyn and Sion finding a new direction later in life, alongside the personal changes facing the rest of the team.

Writer and creator Matthew Barry said the series is about “finding friendship and meaning in later life” through a police procedural, with Tenby providing the setting for the story.

The drama was created and written by Matthew Barry, whose previous credits include Men Up and The Guest. Hannah Daniel has written Episode 4, with Andy Newbery directing Episodes 1 to 4 and Rhys Carter directing the final two episodes. The series comes from Quay Street Productions, the company behind dramas including The Blame, Fool Me Once and The Guest.

Where Was The Last Detectives Filmed?

The series is set in Tenby, with the newly released images showing the detectives working around the town and along the Pembrokeshire coast. The location is a major part of the series, with the murder investigations unfolding against beaches, coastal scenery and the town itself rather than a more familiar city police setting.

The drama is a co-commission between BBC One, BBC iPlayer and BBC Cymru Wales, and has also received support from the Welsh Government.

When Is The Last Detectives on BBC One?

The BBC has not yet announced a transmission date for The Last Detectives. The series will consist of six hour-long episodes and will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with more details about its launch expected closer to transmission.

At CultureCues, we always have room for a good British crime drama, and The Last Detectives already has a strong cast. Mark Lewis Jones and Steffan Rhodri are both great choices to lead the investigations, and having each case spread across two episodes should give the mysteries some time to develop properly. The Tenby setting also gives the series its own look, and we like that the story is bringing friendship and starting again later in life into the mix alongside the murder cases. We’ll be keeping an eye out for that BBC release date.

The Last Detectives is coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with a release date still to be announced.
