The first trailer has arrived for The Uprising, Paul Greengrass’s new historical drama starring Andrew Garfield as an ordinary farmer who becomes the unlikely leader of a rebellion against King Richard II. Set during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, the film follows a growing army of common people as they rise against the Crown in a fight for justice and survival.
Garfield plays a character known as the Ploughman, who begins the trailer by explaining that he is neither a soldier nor a priest, but a farmer pushed beyond what he can endure. As people are forced to work in brutal conditions and pay taxes they cannot afford, his anger becomes the spark for a wider revolt.

The footage quickly moves from exhausted workers and violent confrontations to the beginning of a full rebellion, with Garfield’s character gathering an army and preparing to march on London. “It is time to set the world on fire,” he declares, before promising that there will be no peace until the people are free.
Greengrass wrote and directed the film, bringing the same grounded intensity seen throughout his previous work to one of the largest uprisings in English history. The story takes place in an England still dealing with the aftermath of the Black Death, while growing taxes and political unrest push ordinary people towards resistance.
Garfield is joined by an excellent cast including Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis and Thomasin McKenzie. Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston and Sky Yang also star.
Greengrass also serves as a producer alongside Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter and Lars Sylvest. The film is produced by Blumhouse Productions, Thank You Pictures and Supernix, with Focus Features handling its theatrical release.
For CultureCues, this is a seriously strong first trailer. Andrew Garfield looks brilliant in the role, and you can already feel the intensity of his performance. Add an incredible supporting cast and a fascinating piece of British history, and The Uprising already has plenty working in its favour. We are ready to join the revolt.
The Uprising will be released in US cinemas on 11 September 2026, followed by its UK cinema release on 9 October 2026.
