The first trailer for Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning has arrived, offering audiences their first look at the writer’s return to the world he first explored in 2010’s The Social Network. Described as a “companion piece” rather than a direct sequel, the new film revisits Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg through the lens of the events that inspired The Facebook Files, the Wall Street Journal investigation that exposed concerns about the platform’s impact on society and the company’s handling of internal research.

The official synopsis reads: “The film is inspired by the true story of how Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”

Oscar winner Mikey Madison stars as whistleblower Frances Haugen, while The Bear star Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. The cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg.

The trailer opens with Haugen approaching Horwitz and insisting she wants to “help Facebook, not hurt it”, setting in motion a story that ultimately leads to one of the most significant whistleblowing scandals in recent tech history. Viewers also get their first look at Strong’s portrayal of Zuckerberg, a role previously made famous by Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network. In the footage, Zuckerberg prepares to face congressional scrutiny while defending Facebook’s role in public discourse, describing himself as a “free speech absolutist” and insisting he is “not the one who’s lying”. Strong has previously spoken highly of Sorkin’s screenplay, calling it “one of the great scripts I’ve ever read” and saying it “speaks to our time”. When asked about following Eisenberg’s acclaimed performance, the actor reportedly said his approach had “nothing to do” with what came before.

The trailer has already got people talking online. Some viewers are praising Strong’s transformation, while others are comparing his Zuckerberg to Jesse Eisenberg’s Oscar-nominated performance. Fans have also picked up on the fast Sorkin dialogue, which is very much still part of the film.

Sorkin serves as both writer and director, taking over from David Fincher, who helmed The Social Network. The original film was a critical and commercial success, grossing more than $220 million worldwide and winning three Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.

For CultureCues, The Social Reckoning is firmly on our watch list. Sorkin returning to the world of Facebook is enough to grab our attention, but Jeremy Strong stepping into Zuckerberg’s shoes makes this one even more intriguing. It already looks like the kind of tense awards-season drama we’ll be dissecting the second it lands.

The Social Reckoning is scheduled for release on 9 October 2026.
