Netflix has announced that its upcoming Korean series The East Palace will premiere worldwide on 17 July, alongside a new poster offering a first look at the supernatural mystery. Set where the royal palace meets a shadowy spirit realm, The East Palace is a period drama that blends mystery, fantasy and folklore.
The series follows a royal curse that forces its characters to cross the boundary between the real world and a realm inhabited by restless spirits. The official description reads: “What if the only way to stop a royal curse was to cross into a realm of spirits?” That is exactly the kind of premise that gets our attention. Royal curse? Spirit realm? Palace secrets? Yes, Netflix, we’re listening.
The East Palace reunites director Choi Jung-kyu (The Devil Judge, Children of Nobody) with writers Kwon Sora and Seo Jea-won, whose previous work includes Bulgasal: Immortal Souls and The Guest. Together, they promise a story filled with supernatural intrigue and immersive world-building.
Leading the cast is Nam Joo-hyuk (Twenty-Five Twenty-One, Start-Up, The School Nurse Files) as Gu-cheon, a man capable of crossing between the real world and the Realm of Gwi, the spirit world. His role is to hunt down spirits that stray too close to the living. Roh Yoon-seo (Crash Course in Romance, 20th Century Girl, Our Blues) stars as Saeng-gang, a court lady who is uniquely attuned to the spirit realm, while Cho Seung-woo (Stranger, Divorce Attorney Shin, Sisyphus) plays the King who summons the pair to the East Palace.
According to Netflix, Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang find themselves travelling between palace corridors and the borderlands of the Realm of Gwi as they investigate a mystery hidden deep within the palace walls. As they uncover the truth, they discover a dangerous connection between the kingdom’s present and its past.
For CultureCues, The East Palace already sounds like a fascinating addition to Netflix’s growing slate of Korean dramas. The combination of palace intrigue, folklore and supernatural mystery gives it a distinctive hook, and we’re always interested when a series promises both ghosts and royal secrets.
The East Palace premieres on 17 July, exclusively on Netflix.
