DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have released the first proper teaser trailer for Shrek 5, reuniting Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. The long-awaited animated sequel will arrive in cinemas on 30 June 2027, bringing Shrek back to the big screen for the first time in 17 years and marking the first main instalment since Shrek Forever After in 2010.

Plot details remain under wraps, but the teaser sends Shrek and Donkey back on the road together for what Donkey proudly describes as “another whirlwind, big-city adventure.”

Naturally, Donkey is thrilled to be getting the team back together. “It’s really happening,” he declares before deciding the occasion calls for a complete makeover, including getting his arms “yoked,” his back “jacked” and possibly doing some work on his badonkadonk. Shrek appears considerably less enthusiastic about the plan.

They will not be travelling alone. Fiona and the couple’s sons join the journey, with Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernández voicing Fergus and Superman actor Skyler Gisondo playing Farkle. Zendaya is also part of the new cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia, although she is notably absent from the latest footage. Her character previously appeared in the film’s first cast announcement teaser in 2025.

Whatever brings the family to the city, the trip quickly goes wrong. Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and the boys are chased through the streets before ending up in jail, where Donkey begins singing The Police’s “Roxanne” to an increasingly irritated Shrek. Some things never change.

The trailer also brings back the Gingerbread Man, who has already supplied its most meme-ready line. With two jelly sweets stuck to his backside, Gingy proudly announces: “I’m caked up like a freaking bakery.”

Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon direct the sequel, with Brad Ableson serving as co-director. Dohrn previously worked across the second, third and fourth Shrek films, while Vernon was part of the directing team behind Shrek 2 and has long voiced the Gingerbread Man throughout the franchise. Michael McCullers wrote the screenplay, with Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri producing.

The new film arrives 25 years after the original Shrek was released in cinemas in May 2001. Although this will be the first official Shrek film in 17 years, the wider franchise has continued through the Puss in Boots spin-offs, most recently Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022.

For CultureCues, the nostalgia kicks in as soon as Myers and Murphy start trading lines again. The animation may look different, but Shrek and Donkey’s familiar dynamic is still right there, while bringing the children into the adventure gives the sequel a natural way to expand the story. We still need to know where Felicia is, though. For now, consider us ready to head back to Far Far Away.
